A number of you folks dismiss "store bought" prepping as somehow being the ugly kid sister to the prettier "home grown" prepping. I understand that. I'm just saying for those of us that have to buy the food we store, it is not practical or cost effective to buy fresh and preserve. It's better to buy already preserved foods, and under those circumstances it is best to buy foods that are preserved specifically for long term storage.
You may have gotten that idea from my post... but it was not exactly what I meant. I started out buying canned and boxed food from the grocery store. It was what I could do and what I could afford and is certainly a viable and great option. I only meant that when opportunity presented itself to move on to growing and preserving that I personally found that to be a better value economically and health wise for our family. I also enjoy food preservation - kinda in the same way some the guys here like guns - I mean seriously who needs all those guns when a big stick will do! 😆 😆
I agree that in most cases buying regular priced vegetables and preserving them is not cost effective. When I didn't have a big garden I visited a pick-your-own place. Peppers and tomatoes were worth it - squash, onions and more wasn't. I just bought potatoes from the grocery store at $2/10lb to can. Very worthwhile. It all just depends. We all do the best we can with what we have or can get. I'm just happy everyone is prepping regardless of where the food comes from.

Seriously! I would probably be more scared of Anita with a big stick than say Taz with a gun!
What goes "Quack, Cluck, Moo, Hee-Haw, Meow and Baaaaaaa" and is scarier than a preper with a gun?
ANITA WITH A BIG ASS STICK!!!!! 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

After careful consideration, this prepper has decided that it's time to shut up!
I think I'll go watch the carrots in the dehydrator and stay outta trouble.
Mum's the word! 😆 😆
Funny, I just wrote a post on my blog outlining the economics of growing food. My numbers support this statement 100%.
You can check out the post here...
I just bought two 10 pound bags of carrots for $2.00 each. The seeds would cost me close to that much never mind the time & space it takes to grow them. So based on my experience the cost is not always cheaper.
However you can not beat the taste or the good feelings from growing your own food.
That was a good deal. The best that I could do was 3lb for $1 at Walmart. I picked up six bags. I intend to try them stored vertically in sawdust (clean wood chips) inside sealed food grade containers. Has anyone tried this?
Well Entropy it would seem that many of us are on the same page so to speak. I agree with everything you have said and have taken the same path except for the wheat grinding. I guess that will be the next thing that I have to investigate.
The point that Denob made about the economies of growing food is very true. This year I purchased six chickens. Not a lot but more than adequate for our needs. I have kept careful track of expenses vs. feed cost and I have calculated that it works out to about 80 cents per dozen. That's better than $3.29 at Walmart plus know that mine are really fresh. I could reduce that price buy selling a dozen or so a week but up to this point I have been just giving them away. It is amazing how far good will can take you.
plus if you coat your eggs with mineral oil and NOT wash them off, you can keep them on the shelf (not refridgerated) for something like 8 months. i have no personal experience in doing this, but i know people who have. . . worth reading up on!

I think some have misunderstood me. I'm not saying it's more expensive to grow your own food, I"m saying that for any number of reasons there are a lot of people out there (myself included) that don't grow their own food. A number of you folks dismiss "store bought" prepping as somehow being the ugly kid sister to the prettier "home grown" prepping. I understand that. i still buy a lot of store food, i spend $100 tonight and other then a fake chicken, salad dressing, (ok like 10 bottles but on sale). . . alright, the fruit and veggies only cost about $60 but none the less, it's a lot. i have no apples, pears, this year, and i can't grow oranges, or avocados. . . point being store bought stuff has it's place.
i didn't get peppers in this year, so i bought about 12 of them, some are in the slow cooker, some are in the food dehydrator. . . there is no right or wrong way to store food, as long as you're not wasting it 😉

I am very new to this so sorry if I ramble on here. Anyway I'm just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this. I work for a large grocery chain and have direct knowledge of the locations of all 20+ of our warehouses across the country with 5 location in Ontario alone and 4 within a 1 hour drive (Closest of which is 15 mins. away). Just to mention also none of the buildings are marked with the company name so someone without direct knowledge would have no idea what they were. Now depending on what happens and if I had to bugout to my cottage (Approx. 3.5-4 hours away). Depending on the route I would take I could pass 1-3 of the 4 warehouses (The 4th is 1 hour the opposite way). do you think it is ok to prep less food and possibly count on these location to be available for some additional food? Obviously the people that work at these locations would probably think of them too but still.
Anyway sorry if I rambled on there.

I wouldn't break into someone's home and take their food if that's what your thinking. I'm only thinking worst case scenario type event. Such as post-apocalyptic event like what ever happened in the movie "The Road", or "The Book of Eli". It would be a food storage that is just sitting there going to waste.

what you're asking is a fair question, it comes down to are you willing to risk your life to count on it being there? risk your freedom that you're going to get out with the food and not be caught by whatever authority there is, or get shot in the process.
if half the world is dead, there is no law and order, it's every man, women, child and dog for it's self. . . YES TAKE THE FOOD.
but if there is any sort of society left, you are not just stealing from the owner of that supply chain, you are potentially taking food from everyone else that could be in line to buy or receive free food from rationing programs.
first and foremost when it comes to prepping, you FOLLOW THE LAW, if there is no law, then i guess we are in trouble. but where do all laws come from? the bible in this country. . . and it says not to steal. . . if you're bugging out, you kinda need GOD on your side. (if you don't believe in GOD then that's a whole nothing issue 😀 )
back to the topic. . .
we have only ONE thing we can control in any situation, what we do BEFORE it happens (ok and how we act during it). on this site we prep!!!! (which will help us learn to control the stress when something happens)
if you prep less, you may not make it to the supply warehouse, you might get killed on the way, you might get arrested, you might not be able to drive to it, (or any where), you might not be able to leave your house (you might be in a camp). . . in all those situations you DIE (or lose control of the situation) because you weren't ready. do you have kids? if so, PREP harder.
if you get to the warehouse you might find it empty. . .
don't plan that someone else will prep for you, and don't plan on going to buy all your preps at the 11th hour. . . it's not going to work. things will be in short supply, things will need to be substituted, and if you can't find a critical piece of gear, or some item. . . then you've screwed yourself and your family.
going to the warehouse seems like a victimless crime, but in my warehouse, in an aCOMS (a collapse of modern socity) WROL (without rule of law) you might get shot for stealing food. if there is no resupply, my food is my life blood, without it i'll die, stealing it means you are murdering me to stay alive. . . in cases of people trying to murder me, where i can't call the police to have you locked up, i can't get a restraining order and know i'll be safe, i can't detain you myself, i can't take your word that you won't come back and try it again, with MORE people. . .you might get shot. . . these warehouses might have the same thought process as i do. . . but one of my neighbours is an OPP, so you might not get shot lol.
it all comes down to, if you want to prep, then prep. . .nothing else will give you the security!

Great advise thank you very much for the reply. I haven't actually started anything except maybe purchased a few move weapons and not even the greatest just a few machetes. Not even sure how to tell the family as they think I'm half nuts already with just the machetes.
