ive come across a few gun dealer across ontario that have Chinese Military SKS 'Type 56' Semi-Auto Rifle ...i know the first thing most people are going to think is they can't own one but all you need is a non restricted firearms license and there is a lot of ammo for thses guns one company i found is sell large boxes of ammo 1440 rounds for under 300.00 .
now the nice thing about these gun is that they can be dropped in water, dirt, and mud and can be picked up and fired right away ! the cal is 7.62x39mm .
the one company i found for about 360.00 you can get one sks rifles plus 1440 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammo.
i know not everyone going to think it a great gun but if you check them out you will see they are one durable gun.
myself i will be investing in one of these rifles with the iron sights and being able to add a scope it could be a great gun for hunting and home defence..
won't mind hearing other opions !!

I've owned an SKS about 5 years ago. Great gun. I liked shooting with it. I sold it.

If I had to choose only one single gun that did it all, I'd vote for a Remington 870...the one that takes all 3 shell sizes (although I don't find myself using the 3 1/2" shells at all. I patterned some for goose hunting, but stuck with my 3" usual ones) and comes with the rifled barrel as well. I believe its the Remington 870 Express. Great gun. I had one before I bought this newer one, and despite it being abused and neglected and beat, it worked on fowl, deer and turkey.
It being a pump shotgun, it would work really well for home defense too I'd wager.

Are you talking about the Marstar gun? If so you should know that you'll be the first ever to fire it, and be prepared to research how to properly remove the cosmoline, ESPECIALLY from the firing pin.

Secondly, both myself and Justabear own one of these. We had both of ours at the range the last time we met up. Very solid gun. Very reliable gun. I've never had a misfire in the 500-600 bullets I've put through it so far. The ballistics are similar to a 30-30. It's a smallish cartridge with a big 30 cal bullet. Very effective at close to medium range. An excellent bush gun. At close range with a proper hunting round and an effective shot placement expect to drop a moose. Personal defense, all for it, it's got what you would call "knockdown power" due to that big bullet.

I like the way it loads too, with stripper clips from the top. You can carry way more in the way of stripper clips on you than a magazine and when you get proficient with it, just as fast or faster to load than a magazine. Also, when and if TSHTF you can remove the capacity reduction in the internal magazine easily with a drill or even a file.

Dollar for dollar it's an excellent rifle and I encourage you to get it! Also, it is a TON of fun at the range. Plus, the recoil is there but very manageable.

Same gun here from Marstar. Agreed. It's great. I swapped the wood out for a synthetic stock and steel vented hand guard. Lots of fun!

SKS is a great rifle in an adequate caliber. Basically bulletproof.

Greenguy - what kind of stock is that? Been debating back and forth between what to get myself for my birthday. I'm stuck between a RDS or a decent stock like that.

I have the M1a / M14. Two actually. Though I don't have a need for it the .308 is a little more capable of longer ranges. Ammo is considerably more expensive. But I do love the way it handles and shoots.
I was reading on the CGN website you're better off looking for a Russian or other SKS rather than the China ones.

Correction: Don't get the Chinese civilian models. The Chinese military model is every bit as solid as the Russian SKS, and that's what the Marstar deal is selling. Mine is great, never misfires, its a workhorse.

I finally got to shoot one of these for the first time on the wknd, it was fun, they guy had a Mosin Nagant too, didnt really like it, too long for me. Not sure how your old ammo is working but this guy had a couple fail to eject and a few fail to fire in the hour I was there with him. That would worry me in a defence situation. No time outs in a gun fight.

The worst part of the SKS for me is that you have to take it apart after each shooting session to clean out the corrosive gunk or it will eat up your gun. Ive heard so many different stories on how to clean it, some swear by Windex, say the amonia breaks up the crap, some funnel water down through it and a host of other kinda wierd methods. I prefer shooting longer then cleaning and the Bore Snake is sooo nice and quick. All though I guess sitting infront of the T.V. for an hour relaxing and cleaning the gun would be more fun then puzzles or a crossword.

Final note: I have never heard an SKS owner say they didnt love it. If you want to know for sure, ask someone at the range if you can try theirs. Most will be happy to let you, especially if you have something they want to try.

I always clean my guns after use. It should be basic SOP (standard operating procedure), regardless if it is corrosive ammunition or not. 🙂

That said, as the OP mentioned, Marstar is selling the SKS and ammo combo for $360 ($75 for the SKS if you buy the regular crate of 1440 rounds of ammo for $285... which is a decent price by itself).

If anyone in Calgary wants to split the shipping costs, let's get a bulk rate going. I'm in for another one. 😀 If ammo is all you need, or the SKS and less ammo, PM me and we'll work out a deal. I don't mind more ammo... or two SKS's.
