Is anyone thinking of planting early this year?

I plant my garlic in the fall, doesn't everyone? Someone asked about seeds - each clove of garlic off the head is a seed. Plant half a finger deep in November or late Oct. Wouldn't hurt to try planting some just as soon as you can get into the soil.

yeah thanks, I worked it out. (google helped) ive planted five indoors on a heat mat to see how they do. see if i can get them to sprout.

Garlic is pretty easy to sprout.....even leaving it in the fridge too long and it will send up shoots! Growing it from the clove is best, if you have bulbils from the top of the garlic they will grow too, they will produce a small bulb of about 3 cloves you can replant in the fall and get larger bulbs next spring. This will be my first year planting garlic really (last fall I put in 50 cloves). These I got from the existing garden last year....they came up all on their own so I can't really say I grew them last year. I thought they were onions, right up to the fall when I dug them up (a small caveat for taking my advise!).

I do seasonal work and can say with confidance that you should not plant early, unless if you start seeding indoors. The snow and ice will melt at the same time as last year or the year before. We may have a warmer spring, but not an early spring.

Agreed, although I do plant some potatoes and sometimes even peas as soon as the ground can be worked.

A good approach is to watch some of the plants coming up in your garden like the rhubarb, lovage, nettle, etc. Most plants you'd eat that come back on their own come out of dormancy when the ground and air temperatures are staying warm enough for them.

just thought Id show you this. I put it together on the 4th of this month and it works incredibly well...the beans are between 7 and 8 inches in less than 10 days. the peppers spouted about two days ago and from what im reading that's quick. brocolli sprouted the day after planting!!!

awsome set up carbon, do you run your light for 12 hours? or non stop?

Carbon, clearly your set up has those little seeds just a going..

I don't see where you live on your link so don't have a clue what your weather is like right now, but I do agree that they have overgrown their little starter pots, you have some plants very much in need of transplanting and it looks like you have some green onions/garlic? ready for the kitchen. If you put two of the bean plants in a good size pot and just move them to the best window you have and turn them every second day, you can be harvesting fresh green beans in may to eat.. Mine are getting ready to bloom soon, for in house beans, I do find it its a good idea to given them a hand with a little paint brush when they are in bloom as there are no bugs to help in the house.

If you can put together even a strawbale cold frame for your back yard, depending on where you live, you can get those pea's out, but to be honest, personally, I find pea's don't like to be transplanted, they perfer to be direct planted.. but the the good news is that those pea vines and leaves are very good tasting, crop them as is or try transplant them out into a couple big pots, put them by a sunny window and spend a couple weeks giving them a trim and use them as fresh greens in your cooking.

Don't have any advice I can give on what I believe are the pepper plants, its just really early on those but if you are going to try and keep them, I would recommend trimming then down to one per and get them transferred into their own little pots.. but if you want to start some of your very early cold hardy greens in the next batch, and you will have fresh greens to havest very quickly and you would have plant types that can be planted out in the spring and handle the spring frosts..

Carbon, I was not to clear when I read my note over, I don't need to know where you live, but having the planting zone would help 🙂

no, im in hamilton, on...still cold, expecting snow tonight.

ive actually bought a 500 plant hydroponics system, and thats where the seeds will be going when i get it up and running (fresh veg all year around) theres garlic, peas, peppers, brocolli and beans in there....spinach on the bottom. just seeing how hard it is to grow from seed. i acually want to order organic seeds to put in the hydroponics, so these were just a tester to see if the lights worked (and they do). if i loose them, i loose them. if i do get chance to get them in the ground i wont waste them...

Lucky you with a Hamilton farm, I had to buy a place up in Fergus to get out of Dodge. Just 12 acres vacant land ATM but I'm determined to get something done this year.
