Hey folks,
I just started learning about prepping a few weeks ago. Glad i found a site with some other Canadians finally.
I would like to start storing some emergency water in my basement, but i am not sure where i can find large, food grade barrels. Seems everything that i find online is in the US and they don't ship to Canada.
Does anyone know where i can find large water containers (say 30 to 50 galons) around the Ottawa area?
Thanks
i would look in Kijiji.ca and see what is for sale in your area. There are about 5 places in the Durham Region of Ontario, so there should be some in your neck of the woods.
Another option right now is to use 2ltr pop bottles, and get the $3 larger 3 gal water bottles, no deposit required.
Thanks for the idea. Dont know why i didnt think of it myself. I found 2 water barrels on Kijiji and purchased them. Will sanitize them with some bleech and put them in my basement. So my emergency water supply is looking good.
Just a note (I didn't write it, I just copied and pasted) regarding the use of bleach to purify your water-in conjunction with water storage plans, in the event that you're forced to use questionable water in an emergency situation and/or something to consider when stocking supplies (buy bleach (unscented!)).
WATER PURIFICATION
1) Always drain long-standing pipes for 30 seconds to one minute before drinking! (Cheap remote motels?)
2) 1 Gallon water is disinfected by 8-16 drops of regular household bleach (visually about 1/4 of a teaspoon) - double that for cloudy water. Shake and let stand 30 minutes. One teaspoon will disinfect 5 gallons. Immediately after treating, water must initially have a slight smell of chlorine. If it does not - repeat the process.
3) Household bleach is relatively harmless. The smell or waft of chlorine is not bad: it indicates that water is treated and germ free. Once treated and disinfected, the chlorine smell will go away in a few days.
4) Regularly used water from large tanks may be treated once or twice a month with 1 Oz. bleach per 200 gallons or 5 Oz. bleach per 1000 gallons.
5) Long-standing water in tanks will be disinfected w/ 1 pint household bleach per 1000 gallons. (2500 gal tanks are fine with 3 pints.)
6) Bleach effectively kills bacteria and viruses, stops smells and then breaks down. It's effective germ killing alkaline property is completely neutralized very quickly. It does not stay chemically active in tanks for more than a few days. Most germs require sunlight to grow. Store water in the dark.
7) If water is relatively clear: but has a noticeable smell of chlorine: it is drinkable, disinfected, and harmless. Humans need 2 quarts per day.

That's good info Timberwolf. Going to print it out and post on the wall next to my tanks. Thanks!

Another place to get barrels, 92 Bentley Avenue (off Merivale Rd.) in Ottawa.

we are storing a mix of cases, 10 (and 18 litre containers plus a large bottle of plain bleach to which I attached a plastic coated card that gives the instructions on how much bleach per litre of contaminated water is needed for safe drinking.
All previous post on this topic are great .. my I suggest one other thing .. when you get the news of an event ( if you are at home ) immedietly fill one of your bathtubs with water (hope you keep your tubs nice and clean) also, in case you didn't manage to get as much water as you had hoped .. The water in the toilet tanks is safe to drink .... 🙂
Good point on getting the water into the tub asap, here is another option for storing water there;

Place in Brampton that sells all manner of barrels.
i've bought from them before, nice guy, but didn't have any last time i tried to get some.
i've used in the passed 2L pop bottles they hold up well. some of my first bottles are not 2L ice blocks in my freezer, still dated with the first sticker i used 12/2002
i also used the 5gal water bottles from the water store/water depot. i drink RO water, used it when i was on city water, but still have a number of bottles (and refills) so i keep one in the bedroom to top up the glass at night.
the 3.78 L tropicana OJ bottles work great too, they do leave a little taste. put it thru a Brita filter to improve that.
like i said, i got my 55 gal drums from the Rin enterprises, they work great, but hard to move full. and if they freeze 😯 i have a couple of those floating tank heaters with the guard to keep it from burning the barrel. keeps me in water in the winter too.
i also have 5 250gal water totes, they are great . . . but again, big, they don't moved filled without a folk lift (and i don't have one)
i keep a drip ceramic filter (easy to make the body if you have the filters) i have a metal body though, and extra filters, they filter more water then i hope i ever have too.
stored water tastes kinda funny 😮 so it helps to have a brita filter to remove the chlorine taste before drinking it. (or let it sit open to the air a while) you can add O2 back in by pouring it from pitcher to pitcher, it'll help the taste.
i have a 100 gal tank for rain water (for the garden) and i have a few 55 gal barrel with part of the top cut off (a little more then half the height of the barrel missing) these were left by the old owners, they used them for the horses water i think?!?!?
i have them out by the garden for rain water, they filled up fast last fall (lots of rain here) and i'm going to use one to make fertilizer tea for some of the plants.
if all those options for stored water fail . . . i'll have to walk down to the pond and carry water up to be filter
300 feet away. (less when my pond floods, have to work on that so it stays flooded year round) then it's only 40 feet away lol.
