Busy weekend, all farm work related, frost seeded out half a acre, hauled more compost around here an there, pruned, cleaned beds, started another hugelculture bed, cleaned out the big chicken pen and we built a new front of one of the pens, cleaned all the rabbit pens and fixed one that need a little repair.

Watching all the budding on the fruit tree's and not happy to see them all acting like its spring..

"Shed's" is the winter fur that (deer, elk, moose, buffalo, etc ) these animals shed in the spring. Much like the wild horses do in the highlands.

susannah755 to make a long story short i spent much of last deer hunting season guiding a few guys and had only a week at the end of bow season to hunt my self. I spent 3 days chasing a BIG buck and had him timed by the 4th day. I had it all set up I would get him at first light when he crossed a field on his way back from a night of frolicking with does on his way to his bedding area. That night my wife got called into work and i had to leave the cabin and head home to take care of the family and missed my chance at the biggest buck i have ever seen. I want his sheds and i know where he will shed them, so im going to hunt them down! you have to get them early as the animals like to eat them as they are full of good stuff they like. antlers are a great chew toy for dogs if you didnt know, just cut them into sections and they will chew it till its gone. very healthy!

i will be going after him in the early bow season this year so it would be nice to have his sheds from last year to campare how much he grew. not only will he make a good trophy but he will eat just a good, it is important to harvest the bigger more mature bucks to allow the younger ones to breed with the population ensuring the diversity in the jean pool making to dear population stronger and less sesseptable to diseese

i didnt mean to ramble but it seemd by your comment you didnt like the thought of hunting but it is a form of conservation when praticed correctly. I hunt in a ethical manner meaning all of my hunts are fair chase and if i can not make a clean shot i will NOT shoot! i could not live with my self if i shot an animal poorly and it sufferd needlessly in the bush for days.

sorry about the spelling im a red neck not a rocket scientist.

No ... not at all rattled by hunting. I eat mostly vegetarian by preference, but I also eat fish and meat occasionally. My dogs and cats also eat meat, so I'm realistic in the fact that humans prey upon animals for food. I feel a "bit of a dill" because I couldn't follow the post and I know nothing about moose, elk etc. Thank you to both Ranger2012 & 2012 Compatible for educating an Aussie on the "art of deer, moose, elk hunting". Much appreciated - now I'll go bang my head against a wall for being such a nong.

It's OK - I've learnt something today that I might never have found out about had I not asked. No harm done (but thanks)

im taking my son shed hunting this weekend, i had a BIG buck in my sights last year but did not get the chance at a clean shot so im going to find his sheds so i can compair when i shoot him this year. we will also be doing some hunting for rabit this weekend. i am taking him out as much as i can so he can remember all the trails up there. it will be important later.

Suzannah; Sheds info
in North American Sheds has a few meanings;
1. a shed is a place to put things in, small storage, smaller normally than the Garage which is overflowing with so much stuff that we can not park our cars in and build sheds.

2. Sheds - a hunting term, old military term for the trail markers and markings of hoofed creatures.
hoof marks, antler marks, antler fuzzies left on trees and branches when they rub the coverings off, also the antlers when they Shed them, the shed hair from the transition to spring time,
the Sheds of the animals

Just for clarification, we do not hunt Sheds here either, although some put targets on them, hit them with BB's and other lower calibre firearms.
Now interestingly enough, there is the nasty Mail Box hunters though, normally kids and teenagers although the so called young adults do this to.

LOL..Thanks for that info Wilderness, we too have the dreaded Mail box hunters, so I guess that must mean that they're global!(I like the sound of antler fuzzies though - sounds cute!)

She is 5 or 6 and presently milking 5 gallons, twice a day. Got her for slaughter price...a farmer is moving West and having to part with his herd. We (our friends with a farm and us) are weaning her off the silage and moving to straight hay/grass so it will probably drop to 6-8 a day. Plans to calve her in the fall and raise some milk fed veal for next fall. Need to get a freezer for the cheese, butter, milk and ice cream! A pig may help with all that extra milk too, just a thought 🙂
