Garlic

Many preppers have spent the past few weeks harvesting and preserving their garden produce. We’ve been busy pulling plants for the compost pile, canning, dehydrating, and generally putting up our food stores. However, there is one plant that should be planted in fall…garlic.

Garlic is a huge part of my families diet. No, we don’t chomp into a bulb of garlic for breakfast, but it is used almost every day as we prepare dinner. Not only does it add incredible aromatics and flavor, but the health benefits are well known.

Garlic is planted in fall, about 3 weeks before hard frosts start to hit. For many of us, that time is now.

Break up bulbs into cloves and plant them top up, covered by about 2 inches of soil. Cover beds with mulch if desired. The timing can be a bit tricky and like anything else, practice makes perfect. You want the cloves to set roots before the frost, but not to sprout tops above the soil before the hard frost. Don’t worry, garlic will survive the winter just fine.
