I was just curious if anyone saw the Calgary couple on that National Geographic show "Doomsday Preppers" ??? Any thoughts on what they said?
"It's better to have something and not need it than to need something and not have it!"
I just watched it. Their food storage plan was sound as was their water supply and their preps for the pets were great. I thought they were getting into firearms for all the wrong reasons and that scared me a bit. They would be better off expending that kind of energy including the neighbors in their plans. Also personally I would involve children to that degree.
They seemed like nice people, your average suburban neighbors. Everyone preps for their own reasons but it can't be much fun being haunted by a dream. You can't plan or prep for the intangible.
Thought that it was great that they were preparing with food, water and supplies for their pets. I was worried about their paper sack storage of grains, especially in a basement which could have moisture problems if there was ever a sewage or water issue, and there is no barrier for bugs. As well, the idea of firing a weapon in a small concrete basement with neighbours so close had me envisioning the old pong game. Probably the "bounces" wouldn't go on as long as in the game, but it could do a lot of damage before the bullets stopped.
"It's better to look ahead and prepare than to look back and regret"
As far as the firearms, I think we have to remember this was a program primarly focussed toward an AMERICAN audience. It's possible it was edited & shot with that in mind.
Reality TV can be less than real sometimes. 🙂
Well I just finished watching the show,And if anyone watching this had any doubt about Prepper's being crazy, then they sure as hell think that now. There is no doubt after watching this episode, that we were all made to look like jack ass's...And if any body brings a reporter or writer to any meetings, I personaly will walk out...Holly crap they did a number on us this time....
Better to have it and not need it; then to need it and not have it...
I just watched a couple episodes. While it is interesting and vaguely informative, I think that my wife summmed it up best be summed up as 'a why would you go on TV and tell everyone all that stuff?'
I realize that Nat. Geo. edited things to look a certain way but after the first episodes hit the air, why would people give the producers all that info. Isn't opsec a major part of things?
Ya no doubt this family from Calgary didn't represent preppers to well and the lady was doing all of this because of a dream she's been having since she was a kid??? Instead of preparing for possible "REAL" situations she is stuck on this sick twisted dream!!!
Anyways the other thing i also agree with is yes these people choosing to appear in this show aren't too bright because the have given up a lot of their secrets and locations whih could compromise their family's safety when the SHTF!!!
"It's better to have something and not need it than to need something and not have it!"
I agree with the opsec concerns: why would anyone go on such a show and reveal their information.
As for those families in later episodes knowing better; keep in mind that the filming for the entire season was probably done for all of the episodes at the same time. So the families in later episodes wouldn't have seen the spin that Nat Geo put on the earlier episodes until they had already been filmed themselves 🙁
Imagine sitting watching 3 months of programs, just waiting to see how badly they misrepresented you (or not) and your ideas. Some of these folks may actually be exactly as they are portrayed afterall.
