Edmonton REALLY needs to take their prepping to the next level and get together for a meet. Enough browsing on forums, and chating on the net, time to move things along. All I need to know is how many in Edmonton on this forum want to prepare for REAL? Forum talk is fun, but it wont have you ready the day you wake up and no bank is open, no ATM'S have money, gastations are closed, food stores are empty, and everyone on the street sees you as a target.

Wow, coming off a little strong here....

Build it and they will come as they say. Name a place and date and see who shows up.

Good luck though, seriously.

Well.. Now that you have slapped the face of many that do prep.. Welcome to the board.. Go ahead and set something up.. All i know is throwing mud wont get the results your looking for.. Seems most here do prep and don't want to show up due to giving away their position on many things.

Wow. Considering you don't know anything about me... That's quite a slap. If it was an attempt to encourage it failed miserably. I am not opposed to a meet with others who share my concerns, but that's not the way to get me there. Just makin a personal observation

As I recall, I attempted to set up an informal meet-up back shortly after I joined the board, but no one showed - to my knowledge.

As for the "slap", I don't take offense. Just be prepared for a slap back, 3 Stooges styles.

NOTE: I like to go to Cabela's at least once a month - usually Friday evenings. I had suggested the Tim Horton's nearby ....
But I could be persuaded to meet in some other public place that could serve double-duty, i.e. gear comparison / shop (browse) and chat over coffee.

If you want to get together for a chat and summary of the BC Fraser Valley BO Thanksgiving GTG weekend on the Friday evening or weekend after Thanksgiving at the SW Edmonton Cabela's (Tim Horton's), please post here. PM only works if you have over a certain number of posts - and are approved for it, to my knowledge.
What I will be wearing will depend on the weather.

Tentative for now:
Friday, October 18, 7pm at the Tim Horton's next to Cabela's (SW Edmonton) then.
I'll be the guy in the red puffer jacket and reddish unmarked ballcap.

--- BUMP ---

Meeting Reminder:
Tomorrow, Friday October 18, 7:00pm - that's 1900 for you (ex)mil types - at the Tim Horton's out by Cabela's.

Directions:
Take the Terwillegar exit off the Anthony Henday; drive south and turn left at next main light.
Turn left at second light into Plaza road towards Cabela's.
Take either first or second left into plaza towards Home Depot and
loop around towards Tim Horton's to find parking.

I'll be the guy with the red "puffy" jacket and reddish unmarked ball-cap sipping on a hot chocolate,
with a large container of Tim-Bits available for snacking.
(Please be hungry, as I don't usually eat more than five.)

FYI: no one showed but me.

It is possible 1 or 2 showed but saw the three Edmonton cops on coffee break - there were 3 cruisers parked outside - and decided not to stick around.
I know that 1 person PMd me they couldn't make it due to a work schedule shift.
No one else messaged me they couldn't show.

That is too bad.
I haven't gone back over the thread; are you always trying on weekdays versus weekends or the other way around?

Perhaps it is the timing? We always do Saturday afternoons as it gives people time to travel and then get back home. I'm just guessing though.

Maybe Edmontonians are just more paranoid than their southern cousins 😕

The Red Deer area group has been very quiet lately as well...

I'm wondering if a lack of theme is the issue. Driving 2.5 hours to go shoot the breeze with a couple of guys is a bit of a commitment with possibly little pay off. Maybe others think like that too.

I'm thinking that if someone organized a "lecture" type event and says "I've killed a deer and next Saturday PM I'll offer any Preppers the chance to learn how to butcher it" may yield good results (I'd go!). Or "I've received 4 new solar panels and could use some help installing them in exchange for teaching you how I rig it together." For example, I'm thinking of offering a pro bono first aid course in the greater Edmonton area. That would be a chance for people to get some training and the fringe benefit being the development / strengthening of a network.

Thoughts?

Weekdays, weekends, mornings, nights, afternoons, tim hortons, starbucks, too far away, not in my neighborhood, themes etc etc etc? HA Bottom line is how this thread started. midlifecrisis is putting out the challenge to people to hook up and meet. grps has set up a meet and there is a no show. We have the same thing in BC. No one wants to pry their asses off the chair in front of their monitors to get out and meet people. Here is a news flash. I can talk with you for months on the forum, but don't think for ONE SECOND you are going to get any sympathy from me or the group we have developed, should things go sour. We don't want you knocking on our doors, pleading for a hand out (grasshopper if you remember the ant and grasshopper story), with your 4 kids, 3 dogs and a cage with a bird in it. If you don't want to come out and meet us, you don't want to be associated with us. HARSH? I think I can speak for several groups who have been setting up meets and having no shows, or only the same dedicated faces show up. With that, THESE are the people I will trust should something go wrong. I know they are going to make the effort to help. They will make the difference.

We have had numerous meets in BC to give people the opportunity to come and say hello. People will PM to find out what they missed, (probably to see if it was actually worth jumping in the car and driving 15 minutes for). midlifecrisis hit it on the head. What does it take to get people out to meetings? My guess is to lose everything and not want to make that same mistake again.

I've heard the reasons: Too Far to Travel ! (it will be, if you are hauling all your belongings). Bad Timing! (yeah, Breaking Bad is on and I can't miss it. it goes on and on. Don't Have the money to Prepp (Surprise, we share resources) We used to have a saying when someone didn't want to go diving (scuba) in the club I was in. 'They have to stay home and wax their zipper'. That means ANY excuse will do.

The people I have talked to in person, all seem to have the same mindset when it comes to 'Forum Trolls', when it does happen, don't come to me. You better know the password, and that changes DAILY.

We are prepping. Some faster than others, but we have been pooling/sharing our resources, sharing info, getting things done. It is a shame that gPRS sets up a meeting on his own and no one shows up. But then, that seems to be typical.

Harsh. You bet. But it will be nothing compared to a catastrophy, for the unprepared, and alone.
