I use a "muck rake" the mining type they are great. Couldn't find a picture of one though. I use them all the time because at my location if there is any surface cover it is boulder clay.

I think we're getting away from convenient BOB/vehicle trunk carry e-tool, but other suggestions are indeed interesting too.

With some experience I posted what I thought was the bare minimum for a digging tool to carry in your vehicle. I've carried (and broken) most of the folding/telescoping shovels and e-tool type stuff. They're better than bare hands and a stick but not much. I'll take that mattock before any e-tool.
