I've been looking for another 3000L fuel tank. Yesterday I received a call on a decommissioned well site tank was being sold that had been used for a genset backup fuel. Picked it up for $600 complete with filters, pump and nozzle. Next week UFA is coming out to top up after I polish about 1200L of existing stored fuel from 2 smaller tanks.

Someone would actually be jealous of me purchasing and posting a picture of a 25-year-old diesel fuel tank?

What is this site about again? Lol

I thought for sure I get a question like: "Crier, how do you suppose you're going to store 3000 L of diesel long-term?"

Never mind, move along nothing to see here.....

In my world, the question would have been "how do I afford to pay for 3000 l of diesel?". 😉 BP Australia has some interesting tips to keep diesel fuel good for 5-10 years, rather than just a year. If you are already storing large quantities of fuel, you probably have your own way of dealing with storage, but I actually learned more than I ever thought I would know about diesel storage from it. Wonder if it is accurate here in Canada?

Storing diesel is not a problem. Storing gasoline is. However even gas stored correctly can be quite usable after a couple of years.

Crier's Strategic Oil Reserve is now ready for topping up tomorrow. I spent the day rotating, pumping and polishing about 1800l of diesel. About 4500L of diesel is ordered and 615L of gasoline.

I always purchase marine grade diesel and additives for long term storage. For instance I am pretty sure Stabil Marine Formula (dark blue-ish) is a bit stronger than ordinary Stabil (orange-ish).

A long term storage tank should have an ouput tank filter like goldenrod etc. Consider a transfer pump through a similar filter for using older stored fuel.

Then a series of good filtering and polishing system is always recommended like Racor with extra filters on hand. You can get a bad load of fuel at almost any time anywhere but I have never experience a problem. Its almost a bad luck thing.

I think the most important thing is a covered sealed tight and no air exchange with diesel surface (and minimize temp swings). The rest is really to treat the load just from the station. So some marginal fuel doesn't contaminate your storage tanks. I guess its kinda sorta also a bit of leap of faith that the fuel you just got is fresh and ready to be stored for an extended time. Probably really can't be sure unless you pick it up at the refinery.

I've been stoing and rotating diesel for over 15 years and have yet to have a clogged engine filter. Today I poliished fuel that is almost 7 years old....

Crier, I suspect you have a hoarding problem and an intervention is required, I am willing to assist you and will bring a large trailer! Please provide directions 😀 😀

As most preppers already know, diesel stores better than gas, and if you add an anti-bacterial treatment it can be stored for decades.
Gas is even good for 5+ years if you as Stabil or similar products. It's all in how you store it.
If you didn't know, now you do.

With my UFA discount, and the price of fuel jumping 14.3 cents a litre in a week, i saved about .19 cents a litre.

Not a bad return on the investment.....

Crier that's still high. I currently sit at $0.07/liter. But that doesn't include picking up the oil and actually making the biodiesel. I do work in the oil patch so the methanol is uh,,, well greatly reduced from what you actually purchase it for at UFA.
We kinda go through barrels and barrels at a time so 20 litres here and there isn't really noticed. I do ask if I can have it though. Most think its kinda neat what I do so give it freely. I have not calculated my costs into making it. Figure if things get really bad I am a wanted man. (wife says I wish)
