We just moved into a house with a fireplace and I'm looking to stock up on wood. I don't have a truck/chainsaw (let alone a truck for hauling) so cutting my own would be a big task. Before I spend $300-400 for a cord, anybody know of another option? I'm in Calgary if that makes a difference.
Phone some Calgary arborists like Urban and see what they have in their yard for free.
Sometimes if you are in their area, they will dump off at your house, just to get rid of it.
Keep in mind most couldn't be used until next year and it is not split.

"Damn it, I should have listened to Crier.... that bastard is brilliantly gifted with "supernatural common sense."
You could also try some framing companies, often they will have the off cuts bins for 2x4 stuff set out with a sign saying 'free firewood'.
I have also gotten some nice (and I mean NICE, like oak, teak, walnut, etc) off cuts from cabinet making shops.
You could give those guys a try. But you won't get the volume like you will from arborists.
You can find lots of "free firewood" ads on Craiglist and Kijiji, too.
yes there are listings on kijiji from time to time as well. they often say things like "if you can cut it and get it out of here, you can have it". So grab an axe and a splitter (which you should get anyways), maybe a chainsaw if the wood isnt already cut into rounds, a muscular friend with a big truck, and get at er!
fyi if you really cant find a truck, rent a uhaul. get em as big as you want, from a half ton to a big moving truck.
See you all after.
Often I like to stock up on free pallets! alot of people give them away for free. you can make things out of them as well as use them for fuel. Once you pull them apart and remove the nails they stack up nicely. Try getting them to drop of a few loads for you, you might be surprised that they will. Try and get the plain untreated or non painted ones, but free is free. you can simply cut them with a good skill saw or hand saw if you wanna work on your arms a bit for the perfect size to fit your stove. Ne where you might find someone that works with wood and might have cut offs, just stop in and ask. After awhile you can find a few shops and become a regular in picking up there scraps for free minus gas, but if your in that area ne ways; it might as well be free. Don't be shy ask around whenever you can and best of luck stocking up.
Never underestimate the power of free! If someone has deemed something valueless, yet U see value in it; Then you've already made a profit and savings!
also if you have access to any farmers, maybe express your interest in firewood. They may be tearing down a barn or outbuilding, or may know someone else who is. Most of the time they will recycle their own wood, but you never know! my grandfather got about 2 cords of wood that came from an old stables that a friend of a friend tore down and had no use for the wood. Word of mouth works just as good as kijiji if you ask the right people.
See you all after.
