Has anyone researched gas stabalizer ? What did you find out? I've read of putting it into gas when you start to store it and also if it has sat a while and then you need to use it. Which is best-or both. And what is the shelf life of yet to be used stabalizer ? What are the best kinds and where are they available ? Thank you for sharing.

Zana,

I always keep 4x25L cans full in the shed and my large generator is always topped up. I add Stabil stabilizer to it (got it a C Tire) per the instructions. I can't recall it stating anything on the duration of which it would stay fresh but I would say 6 months would be fine. This kind of product is more or less designed to keep seasonal things like snowblowers and lawn mowers happy during their off seasons hence my 6 months rationale. I think the issue that we will be dealing with is the addition of ethanol which may break down faster.

Though I treat my gas, I try to rotate my cans through the vehicles about once every seasons and the generator's tank is emptied no less than once a year prior to being filled with a fresh tank of premium (no ethanol) gas. I've once put 50 litres of 6 months old treated gas in the truck and it didn't run differently at all.

Probably not the scientific answer you researched, but maybe this anecdotal information can be of use to you.

Hello,

A few years ago I did a good bit of research on this topic. Below is a link to the best stuff I good find. It works as advertised. There was a in BC that imported this stuff so 5 yrs ago there was no issue shipping. Sorry the name escapes me but I think with a little internet sleuthing you should be able to find em.

Good luck

I just put one-year old gas in the tank last February. It had the stabilizer from Canadian Tire.
I didn't notice any difference but of course, it was 25L in a 120L tank... not sure if that watered down any of the negative impacts? Pun intended.

Well, I'll try posting again, but as it stands, only 2/4 of my posts thus far have been approved. The other 2 were either "lost in cyberspace" or deleted by the mods.

I understand you can only get 1-2 years of shelf-life out of regular gas, even with stabilizer. The best bet is probably to use diesel powered vehicles. You can get a much longer shelf-life (like up to 10 years) on diesel. Additionally, you can make biodiesel, or create a hybrid mixture with ethanol, etc. Gasoline doesn't seem to be a great prepping fuel...

Just my $0.02.

Good luck.

Not to go off topic, but Propane dose not have a shelf life...
