Once we move into our new neighbourhood (near the business) we're going to start inviting community people at meetings where those interested can discuss how we can jointly improve our lot.

One nice thing is a big public park area - fenced off, it would make a nice community garden. Borrow a few mean dogs, add some motion activated floodlights, and we have a nice food source. It would help bring folks together too... gardening is a good social activity.

Hey Local bread, not allowed to pm yet, i am in medicine hat and am looking for like minded people to learn and share with.
Its taken me a long time to discover such a forum let alone like minded ppl in the hat !
Ive been here 8 yrs am originally from saskatoon sk.
It never hurts to be prepared and at the very least learn a little independence.
We are a typical family, shopping a walmart and eating franken food but we are eager to learn and some what new to the concept of prepping.
Look forward to contact.

Welcome...I am new also and very excited to see so many intelligent minded people in the Medicine Hat.Time is running out quickly I fear ,so I think we need to get rolling on getting a group established soon.It seems there are so many factors for the SHTF scenarios going on right now.Who knows how our government will perform if something does happen. The government is the last to rely on it comes down to yourself and your community.Just like it was in the beginning.Peace

AS Local Bread has made note...Med Hat sits on major gas and oil pockets...if the weather becomes dry and water becomes a real issue...Fires and explosion in this great city could be our greatest doom. This has become somewhat of an issue to me.Any ideas? Thanks

This intensified localism might work... however I could see some potential problems,
one being outsiders who dont want to take part and only want to take,
the other problem being ,everyone else who didnt give a crap about being prepared is very hungry and as we saw during hurricane katrina it takes no time at all to revert back to our animalistic roots.
Developing a community based on trade etc. is a great idea but I do think that ultimately you will have to know how to protect your families and property, weather this is done in group form from a particular base of operation or going it alone and hoping things get better at some point.
I think being ready on both fronts is probably the best course of action, one last thing i would like to mention is that groups can be a safe haven but they can also be targets, personally ive always been a believer in the power of numbers.
What are your thoughts.....?
thanks

One must be cautious, only because if you screw up once,by choosing the wrong people, that could be it.Trust, honesty and integrity are very vital at this time.Personally I want to see what a persons mindset is,and take it from there. As mention groups can be a target and people can be persuaded to give out info.I am not being paranoid just protective.I need to feel a connection with the people i am going to be working with and they must possess the forementioned qualities,my life and those with me are depending on that, sooooooooo for me,it comes down to the quality of people, not the qauntity. We should maybe find a visual way of identify those who are apart of this community. Thoughts?? Thanks P

G'day all,

Newbie on this site. I've been prepping for about 10 years. Been living in Calgary for about 7 years.

I've generally kept to myself over the years. Most of the people I know think prepping is nothing more than buying a few ounces of silver each month. Try talking to them about food and water storage and they look at you like you've got 3 heads. They simply don't get it that storing food & water is the same thing as buying silver. They just have different uses.

I've gained many skills over the years and often tinker around building interesting things I see on the net. My latest project was making a replica of the Nimblewill Nomad Stove. For those of you who never heard of it, search it on YouTube. It's a folding, portable, wood burning backpacking stove and it works great. Computers are my main gig but I can also drywall your garage among other things. For the past 2 years I've been experimenting with the bucket clothes washing system to see how well it cleans clothes using nothing more than a bucket (or Rubbermaid tub) and a plunger. I found it works much better than I expected since I haven't been to a laundromat in 2 years, so I guess the experiment is over and it's now a full time practice (lol). I figure I've saved close to $500/year just in laundromat fees.

I would be interested in talking to local Calgarians about bartering, swaping services & skills, and general ideas. I never thought I was going to be living here for 7 years but it looks like I'll be here for a long time yet. So I better start talking with like-minded folks in the area. The world just keeps getting worse and I can't think of a better place to be than Alberta if the SHTF!

Cheers,

SimpleGear

Nice post; just south of you but have travelled all over North America its not the province you want to leave if the S.H.T.F. BUT GET OUT OF THE CITY..stay away from people...your bug out plan should be a 30 k's out in 48 hours...if walking and 200/400/k out if driving and remember everyone is going to head west if it gets real bad....water is good so is food but how much can you Carey and how are you going to defend it....think of drying your food [ for bug out storage] and a real good water filter system...

Better to have it and not need it; then to need it and not have it...

It would be nice to have a symbol to identify another prepper...

I've spent a great deal of time reading history, looking at mistakes not to be repeated and so forth. The problem with choosing the right people for your community is that you are looking at people. People are flawed, and despite the attempts of many a dictator, the perfect system has yet to be created. The most successful civilizations are the nomads. Small, concentrated, rigid family discipline and little reliance on more complex social structures. Tribal Mongolians for example have been around since before recorded history.
The result is a very utilitarian existence which most of us would not find appealing. With such a lack of diversity and individualism, many of us having been raised in modern society would feel stifled and unfulfilled.

moral of the story is, its too easy when thinking of post SHTF communes to develop in your head a Utopian image of what should be, including who should be. Truly the only factor you can't control is the human one.
Embrace the risks involved in having a group of preppers instead of trying to control it. Given the risks of failure either way, its best to enjoy your self regardless of where the path leads.

Time is running out....I would like to try and find others in Medicine Hat that would consider a communal type of BO.I am prepared at my home, but feel the need to have a BO plan that will involve a few others.I feel once we have gotten to the point of having to leave our homes ....and have a group plan ,our chances of survival will increase.By this I mean a location that we can meet up at if BO is our last alternative.Somewhere sustainable and safe where we can all work together to protect what we have or.....to start anew... any preppers with land out there?? Who would be willing to welcome a few innovative and knowledgeable people to their home. Its time to come up with plan B....any one interested or have any other ideas. Thanks P

Im curious Pandoras if there could a muster point for starters. But at what point do you meet there and under what circumstances.
ie. I'd hate to be hanging around the muster point and have no one show for days...maybe ppl could meet in that location twice a week during shtf, simply to exchange information and plan.
Having even that much of a plan would be better then nothing, however it would be ideal to have the land etc etc.
just tossing out some ideas...?
