The Alberta Health Services has produced and sent out a "Personal and Family Disaster Preparedness Guide". On the inside cover it says that it is brought to you by "Emergency/Disaster Management in partnership with Workplace Health & Safety" It's actually pretty good.

I'm thinking about giving copies especially to people who could end up on my doorstep. If I could find a way to get them to provide a bit for themselves, it will take the stress off me somewhat.

It's also a good way to start a prepping conversation without revealing your hand. "Hey lookee this here government publication... what do you think???"

A year or so back I went on their website and was able to order their former emergency prep stuff free, so I'll bet you could do that for this. In my case I have access to a ton of them through a friend whose place of work received boxes of them.

I think you have an excellent idea Martha. You could also just that as a conversation starter to broach the subject to fiends and neighbours. At least you would know how they felt on the subject and if they were at all interested maybe you could help steer them in the right direction.

Every year getprepared.gc.ca hosts Emergency Preparedness Week.
This year it will be held on May 5 - 11.
Last year I was able to order some free stuff from them including little fridge magnets...everyone loves fridge magnets.
Also, there are little brochures and such...all free!
I took some of the magnets and put one up on my metal filing cabinet at work.
What do ya know, a few coworkers actually asked about it.
I was very nonchalont about it with replies like "Oh, just something I got in the mail about emergencies and stuff...they sent me a bunch of them, I could bring you one if you want..."
I did get a few takers, and hopefully some of them actually looked at it!
It was a little fold out brochure on a fridge magnet...cool idea.

Martha was kind enough to bring along a copy of the new Guide when we met yesterday. In year past the government encouraged us to be ready to fend for ourselves for 72 hours, but now they indicate 3 days is good but 2 weeks is better. The guide is nicely set up and gives you an index that really makes it easy to flip to the section you want. AND even better they consider our pets as part of the preparations!
