I was looking at firearms choices for my wife and I wanted it to be simple, portable, light and friendly looking. The 10/22 takedown is the best one I have seen at less than $500 which I can mod a butler creek stock to fit it. It pairs up with the 22 LR handgun too so it makes ammo easy for her to carry and the recoil is next to nothing on 22LRs. Accuracy wise I am not 100% sure but it also depends on how much training you have also with the firearm so it varies depends on user's experience.
What do you guys think about this type of firearms for your love one?
I have one and I like it. It is very friendly looking! You can't buy Ruger 25 round mags in Canada - they fit the pistol so illegal in here. But butler creek make them and I'm sure others as well.
But the regular 10/22 is simpler if you don't need it to be compact.
the one with the folding stock, so the whole system can be broken down and won't be any longer than 20 inches, perfect for putting in a backpack if one does not want to carry it in sight. From a legal standpoint I am not sure if cutting the barrel down from 18inch to 14 or 16 will keep it unrestricted but it is something worth looking into I guess.
Out of sight is out of mind right?
I am just thinking about backpacking it where no vehicles can travel. And I have experienced first hand how heavy a fully loaded ruckpack with all the rest of your gear and hiking it a few km in the summer is.
Of course the option of more items can be made if a vehicle is available. But plan what you can on foot first before you plan what you can do in your Vehicle then on your BOL.
Who wants to confront some strangers in a SHTF situation? We are all trying to avoid people so there is no need for a high powered rifle and especially for someone untrained and unconditioned for it. And hunting small games is better with a 22LR. Your food will look like food and not roadkill.
I made a slight mistake on my last edit.
The magazine capacity is restricted for "Centerfire".
There is no restriction for "Rimfire" last I checked.
Wholesalesports still sells 25 round mags.
When SHTF I know those rules will all go out the window so do what makes sense to you and your moral standing.

Hunting rifles are like paint brushes you use the correct one for the job. I see the need for a high powered rifle, a shotgun, and a 22. Discussing the makes and models will only start an argument here as every ones choice is different. This will allow you to harvest the animal in a humane manner.
In some past dealings with the CFO I know that you cannot legally cut the barrel length of any firearm in Canada. Doing so simply makes the gun illegal to own. It can be manufactured with a short barrel as long as the required overall length (not sure of length) is maintained.
The 10/22 is a great firearm with many options available. I would stick with the regular model as I have heard of some point of aim problems if assembly is not perfect. A synthetic stock is great for a working gun without a bunch of mods. The mods will only draw attention of others when they see a scary gun. As a prepper you will want to stay under the radar. I would put the money into a sling, extra mags, and good aiming system either a red dot or scope which ever you prefer.
Mine is an older model with the 18" barrel and it is very accurate.I stick with the smaller mags for hunting (and carry a couple extra) simply because that is the balance point of the rifle and makes for an easy carry.
Great rifle let us know what you decide.

Be careful with this, I believe wookie was talking about the ruger bx-25 magazines that are designed for both the rife and handgun which makes them a prohibited item in Canada. You are correct, that you can find magazines with increased capacity here, just not the good ruger ones 😉
Taken from http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/bulletins/bus-ent/20110323-72-eng.htm
Magazines designed to contain rimfire cartridges and designed or manufactured for use in a rifle do not have a regulated capacity. However, magazines designed to contain rimfire cartridges and designed or manufactured for use in a semiautomatic handgun are limited to 10 cartridges. Magazines designed or manufactured for use in both rifles and semiautomatic handguns are subject to the handgun limit of 10 cartridges.
I am looking for a takedown as well, for the same reasons as you RG... unfortunetley there is a huge backlog on the rifles themselves. every dealer that Ive spoken to who carries them is out of stock, and the earliest ive heard of restocking them is 9 months. I have requested email notifications from each of them for when they are in stock again... but im not holding my breath. I will probobly order a standard 10/22 long before then.
for another option, check out the henry survival rifle. not as highly rated as the ruger takedown, but still very compact when folded up. it may suit your needs.
See you all after.
The Browning SA22 is about the nicest takedown 22 I've ever seen. I heard Norinco is making a copy. I haven't heard anything about availability or reliability of the Norinco but the Browning is one of the sweetest shooters ever.
Canadaammo has the Norinco. It isn't much of a risk at $200

is the norinco tube or magazine fed?

I have recently acquired a 10/22 Takedown. Love the small format of it: once taken apart - which is very easy to do in 5 seconds - it all fits nicely in the small backpack pouch included. The pack is very inconspicuous with simply the Ruger logo on it, so unless you recognize their logo, it could be passed as a trumpet bag or something.
I got 3x Butler Creek 25 round mags with the "speed loader", all this makes going to the range an absolute breeze and a lot of fun.
It was getting very difficult to find a 10/22 anywhere, but I found them at Le Baron out of Quebec. It was shipped at my door in less than a week. That was my first time dealing with them and other than the somewhat rude rep when I called in my order, I was satisfied with the company.
I'm now looking at a small scope with quick detach rings for it (there's room specifically for it in the pack) and it will make an awesome little go gun. It may not be "zombie" scary but by easily carrying 500 rounds, you can offset ballistic damage by shooting more, thus inducing lead poisoning, 40 grains at a time 😉
as it would happen, moments after posting my comment above about unavailability... I checked my email... and had one from cabelas canada. They have the takedown 10/22 in stock. Just ordered one lol

In SHTF a black felt pen could tone down that Ruger logo pretty quickly.
Than= I’d rather be rich than poor.
Then= I first became hungry then I ate.
There = She is there now.
Their = They have their things.
They're = They're going to the mall.
To = They came to the house.
Too = That's too bad.
Glad my find helped you decide on getting one.
The AR-7 survival rifle is also nice and compact down to 16 inches and waterproof but you are limited to 10 round mag. 10 rounds goes through quick in 10 secs or less.
The Ruger can use the Butler Creek mags and with a Butler Creek folding stock, you can shoot it in the folded position with little to no recoil difference. That was the selling point to me because you can somewhat use it as cqb. Close range with any caliber is deadly in the right spot. But I will be doing all or most of the CQB and breaching with my 12g instead of my woman.

I was actually thinking about getting a music themed patch to sew on top of the Ruger logo...
The Ruger 10/22 Takedown is a very popular firearm in the US right now. Nut'n'Fancy did a video review on it and next thing you know it's flying off the shelves. He made note that there were concerns regarding accuracy, but that has been pinned down to improper assembly from what I have been told. He was able to make good hits on targets out to 200m with mounted optics in varying light conditions (my wife can use a .22lr to score 10/10 hits on a 10" plate at 200m). As mentioned the rifle is easily stowed in a case and transported. I would recommend to anybody that they get several 25rd magazines for it and save the bipod weight for a bigger calibre, rest it on a bergen or a mate's back instead. I have also heard that you want hotter rounds for the 10/22 Takedown for functionality/reliability reasons.
