Duffman,
Better make sure your slip drive is working correctly or the Empire will be all over you!!!!
Got any pic's of your other BOV??
Cheers,
Mountainman.
When it comes to BOVs, I say, whatever is still running. My motor cycle is good for getting around traffic, sneaks into bike paths, light on the gas stores...but not as good as most might think. Not great in snow or hurricanes. Our 20 year old corola is reliable(I can get 15 more out of it), moderate on the gas stores, low key, towes the same MC or gear in a light trailer, no computer and keeps us warm and dry. Not so good in really deep snow or mud (or showing up having to look tough). Our tractor, Thats the second to last ditch BOV. If the gas is gone and only diesle or bio fuel or warmed unprocessed vegi oil is available...What ever works. Bonus for washed out roads and getting where a truck has trouble. I need to paint flames on it. 😆 All three get toasted by an EMP...or several months without fuell delivery... or a world without employment income. Those things leave only our Cargo Bycycles. The humble Bycycle set up to carry gear. I dont bike much any more but any time Im heading towards anything scetchy, The bike goes on the roof. If the car gets blocked in traffic or bridges are washed out or roads broken up or forests are blown down onto the roadway, a bike can be lifted over most obsticals and its alot easier than walking or carrying gear on my back. If I am a thousand kms from home, I figure if I can scroung up an old pot, some plastic pop bottles from a dumpster, some decent string...and a BIKE, I WILL make it home. Its sort of like...The best survival knife is the one you have on you when you need it. Oh, I forgot all about my Tie Fighter,"your rebel friends wont get away this time"
I have a Tactical Harness and I have a Tool Belt. The Tool Belt is more Useful.
What ever vehicle you have must be able to handle the terrain you want it for and depending on how you outfit the outside will decide on if your going to be a target for looters/marauders. A plan on what time of day to travel also. In the army they sometimes travel in pitch black in a convoy and your headlights are off because light discipline is really important. You would need to know your route and maybe test it out a few times.
Noise also is a big factor and if your vehicle is roaring in the night, having light discipline will help camo your vehicle a little bit better. So it also comes down to what the situation is.
Hunkering down for a few days before bugging out is good but once your leaving, there could be ambush waiting so plan ahead to do some scouting if possible and take unpaved roads if possible. But i bet most of you already know this.
Phuqd,
Nice ride........I miss my old Jeep. It was a 1970 Jeep Wagoneer. Nothing fancy, but very capable.
My '98 Tahoe is my current go to work vehicle and BOV. There are pictures around here somewhere.
I keep all my gear inside, so as not to attract any unnecessary attention from looters or marauders. And yes we have a mountain bike each before we have to resort to black Cadillacs.
May the Force be with you!
Mountainman.
Nice truck
I'm looking into a older vehicle say a 70-80 truck or SUV do you recommend any one
Preparedness is like a condom , I've rather have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it
This is my old BOV. I actually gave it away to a complete stranger for free but thats part of the long complicated story. Thats not a small moon. Its a space station. This was going to be the cover of my book on prepping.

Ive got a soft spot for the old GMCs. I had the 1969 version. I liked its siplicity under the hood.

Is it possible to get a old vehicle for free or really cheap I'm mechanically inclined so I can fix it up

Duffman,
Your best bet would be to try to network with oe of the small farms around your area. One of them farmers may be willing to let you remove an old vehicle from their farm???
Mountainman.
I never thought of that one thanks

I drive a 2006 4Runner 4x4, but almost went and bought the following as a secondary:

Maybe you would want it, Duffman.
NOTE: the ad is a bit misleading on the offer price ....
Read the fine print.
I have two bicycles as back-ups in different locations, one of which is a mountain bike.
Actually still considering buying beater pick-up or Scout to work on as a pet project.
The old Scouts are hard to find though.
