I picked up a 1983 Dodge Ram 150 full sized 1/2 ton in 1990 for $4000.Was an Alberta Parks truck.Everything heavy duty from heater motor to front wheel bearings,rear end etc,slant 6 automatic.Unfortunately it has one of the first electronic spark control units hanging off the air intake.My guess is it will get fried in an electrical storm.Does anyone know if there is a conversion kit to remove the esc and other components and replace it with a standard system? I have an 8' camper mounted.Great mileage even with the weight.Any mechanics out there know if I can do a conversion with parts from older trucks? Pick n' pull has the odd one come through.What would I have to get to complete the job and make it EMP safe? I'm thinking:distributor,voltage regulator,maybe coil,probably some sensors and.....?
About the best you can do is put in an older engine that has a distributor cap on it. Or, go to the scrap yard and pickup all of the parts that you figure will get fried and put them in a faraday cage. Distributors were mechanically run strait from the engine, and unless you have the means to hookup a cap to your timing chain (belt) than your SOOL. 👿

I've got a couple spare esc modules.I'll put them in a cage.My dist.is still run mechanically off the crank I think.It has a dual pickup system for the spark control.So I'd better get another dist.and put it beside the esc.Now I'd better look up how to make a cage.Thanks ranger.
