I'm interested to know what you all think about joining a "self sustainable community" above and below ground? Living off the grid would be important part of this lifestyle.

Located in Alberta. Get a bunch of well minded folks together to purchase a considerably large amount of land to offer our families a healthier lifestyle by living in a self sustainable community, off the grid where we would grow our own food/raise our own lifestock, etc. If we wanted, we could even raise our own fish, purify our own water, have vegetables that taste like vegetables by having healthy soils (yes, there is a way to have healthy soils again). Everyone would be required to pitch in to do the work to help our self sustainable community flourish even if they had a career outside the community.

Brilliant idea. It would be right up my alley. Are you in/near Calgary?

Yes we are in Calgary but currently looking for a rural setting with lots of trees, privacy, plenty of water where my children can be children and we can teach them about growing up in a healthy environment. We'd like to find a bunch of families that are serious about making a change in their lifestyle. Not interested in living like the hippy generation did or creating a "cult", just creating a well-rounded "community" to raise my children amongst. I guess a good example of this community would be a hutterite colony, just living in separate homes (not attached like a townhome).

thats what I have been looking for as well. I have a lot of theory and practical now to find a place to put it into effect. I have been looking at sask for land parcels as the more remote it is, the cheaper it is, especially if not connected to the grid. I have some protocols that must be followed in the selection of my land and one major is that the water cannot be sourced from glaciers, its defendable, two escape routes from forest fires, maximum solar exposure in hrs/yr, availability to wild game, fish, wild birds and migratory. of course if there happens to be sandstone caves along a ridge, that overlooks the land, then it would do as well lol.

Mountaineer sounds like your thoughts are more along the lines of the type of community my family has been desiring to work towards. We have four little munchkins and have often talked about this type of project. Funny to note we have friends that think prepping is overboard, but have expressed they would love to do this type of project.

I was just looking at the Google sat. map, and I couldnt believe how much of the steps have been developed. I notice that route 66 is said to be closed in May, is that permanent or just for repair, some nice country in that area, with a river and all.

Hawk,

I have to ask why no glacier sourced water??? I have been on few glaciers in the Rockies and the water is very good from this old ice. Are you concerned of contamination?? Or that the water source will melt and cease to exist?? I am just curious.

Mountaineer,

The concept of an actual village of like-minded folks sounds very exciting. Currently, without the extra financial resources to buy in. Curious, were you thinking North or South of Hwy #1?? West of Calgary?? Foothills or Prairie?? How big are talking 600 ac, 1800 ac or more?? Surface water - creek, river, lake?? Forested??

I will keep reading because this is very interesting. Modeled on a member only RV park with a focus on self-reliance - power, food, defence???? Hmmmmm.

Mountainman.

Ranger,

SR-66 is a seasonal closure. There are a few routes in the Foothills that are closed over the winter. Some for good reasons, some for money saving reasons.

PS - Some parts of SR-66 should be repaired but are not. 😉

Being new to this website, please clarify what you meant by "how much of the steps have been developed". Are you referring to stuff that is happening in our neighbors to the south or something else?

Many folks have a desire to do something like this but lack the ambition and drive to follow through with it because of many things including lack of funds, knowledge and fear. By combining forces with folks of various backgrounds (welder, plumber, carpenter, medicine, masonary, etc) the dreams can become a reality even for those who aren't well educated. In order to succeed in something like this, people would have to reprogram themselves to think along the lines of "life is about opening the doors to opportunity and our minds to learning new things regardless of our age." I don't have all the answers or solutions but with other folks of similar interests, I'm sure we can hammer out a suitable solution for everyone. The downside is, it will take a lot of time and money to pull-off something like this which means an investment on behalf of all those who are interested.

Thinking outside the box here...

Who's to say that the melting glacier isn't feeding an underground aquifer which happens to be under your property? I see nothing wrong with tapping into the resources then. 🙂

Mountaineer,

I believe he is refering to the Eastern Slopes of the Rockies aka the Foothills. Look sort of like the Steppes in Eastern Europe. Or I could be totally wrong.
