are walkie-talkies going to work after a solar flare?

A strong EM disruption from a solar flare directed at us would like fry the electronics in a walkie talkie.

A small Faraday cage to store them in might not be a bad idea. Just don't have them charging inside the cage or it defeats the purpose of using a cage.

Muskeg's advice is good.

I use Faraday bags for my smaller electronics.

Solar flares do not necessarily cause EMP's. A CME from a flare could easily knock out the electrical grid without a solar flare. In that scenario your walkie-talkies would work just fine. However if there was a strong EMP they would probably be toast. A simple Faraday cage would protect them. You would also need a way to charge them afterwards so if they have a small charging unit keep that in the cage too. All you have to worry about then would be finding a working 120V source to plug the charger into. I keep a small inverter in the cage with the rest of my electronics. Unless it was a nuclear first strike EMP and you were close to the target car batteries would likely be unaffected. That is a lot of if's, however I included it as part of my preps although I do think it unlikely.

Eee Gads! Now you have me thinking about a 'Faraday closet' in my basement. I would think I don't have to line the floor with grounded metal as it's well underground but the location I am thinking of would suck to line with metal none the less. 🙄

BTR, just buy a couple of galvanized garbage cans and stack them in your closet. A lot cheaper than trying to line it with steel.

I'm just getting things sorted and ready to build a Faraday cage(s) this week.
I'm curious about what people have used to test the cages.

I was planning to use a cellphone, a radio and walkies.
First put the cell inside, close it up and call it. I guess hearing it ring would be a fail.
Then while connected to someone, put the cell inside the cage and close it. Not losing the connection would be a fail.
Next, try the walkies with the same drill.
Finally, try a radio same idea but try both AM and FM.

I'll let you know how it goes. Any other suggestions for tests?

There is a lot of talk about using galvanized steel trash cans as cages. They will stop radio but NOT cell signals. I nut ne and it did not work at all. You may have to nest the faraday cage.

Hope this helps.

Galvanized steel trash cans are not the best material to make a Faraday cage from because of the relatively low conductivity. However, if there is continuous , uninterrupted conduction between the lid and the can and the contents are insulated from the exterior of the can it will act as Faraday cage. You probably had a break in the conductivity of the lid. Make sure the top of the lid and the can are completely clean then seal the lid with conductive tape and try it again.
