Howdy All,
I am searching for an e-Reader. I would like as many supported opinions as possible. Pro's, Con's, limitations, experienced battery life, is solar recharging possible, can the reader be recharged from a USB battery pack, SD card, USB data port, how durable in the field, how easy to read, and most important - how well does it display e-Books in PDF??
Here is a link to wikipedia comparing e-Book formats and a chart with which e-Readers can use/read PDF files. Charts are nice, but I want to hear first hand experience. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-book_formats
I want to put my PDF e-Book on another platform - besides the home computer, external hard drive, USB memory stick and netbook. My MP-3 player will hold PDF files but cannot read or display them. E-Readers are relatively affordable, and I am not opposed to adding one to my reference library if I can find one that works well with PDF, is field durable and can be used with some sort of solar recharging system - direct or indirect via an USB battery pack.
If you would rather send me your suggestions instead of posting, please send e-mails to: thegoodplan at hotmail dot ca
Thank you very much,
Mountainman.
I have heard really good things about the Amazon reader. I am pretty sure people liked its functionality, shopping options and battery life. I am not sure if they allow downloaded content though, may want to google that. So if you want to just put a random PDF instead of a purchased e-book it may or may not allow. But you can snag one for about 100 bucks I think.

For me, Android phone with application EBookDroid.
I have read a couple PDFs with that so far this year (plus several others in EPub, RTF or txt format with CoolReader app in my Android Phone).
The batteery does not last as much as a dedicated EReader hardware, but it charges everywhere and I always have it with me.
I get most of my books DRM-free from the web. But there is an Amazon or a Barnes and Noble apps if you really want to read DRM books.
I use a Kobo Touch. It charges through a USB. I chose this one because the library system does not support the Kindle. Have not tried solar charging with it, just charge it through the computer when it needs to be charged. The charge lasts for a long time. It does the PDF fine and also the library download fine too.
Thank you for the comments so far. I am sure a few more will offer their 2 cents as well. I look forward to it.
Cheers,
Mountainman.
I own a Kobo as well. I chose it at the time because it had a touch screen. Now they all do. Love that I can download from the public library, bookstore, blablabla. battery life (IMO) lasts a long time. Very happy with it. Honestly haven't tried to download a PDF...yet.
I will not stop recommending the Blackberry Playbook (the 32gig version, like $150). It's a 7-inch screen. I use this thing on a daily basis - and I mean daily - on my daily farm work.
I pre-load various podcasts on it in the morning before I leave for my land. This tablet sits in my back pants pocket (just but it fits without hassle). Not only that, but I currently have over 870 documents - many many of them pdf books - I also have 27 videos (including a couple of actual dvd's I transferred over and some saved youtube vids), there's 374 pictures (if only I could sit down for a bit and figure out how to post some of these), 154 mp3's and somehow I have 90 apps on it...and it's just barely over the half full mark on the hdd. I haven't shut it off in almost a month, I just top up the battery in it by plugging it into a cigarette lighter charger in my truck on my way to and from my land. Every now and then I plug it in overnight.
Love this device. It charges fast and with very little power. My only problem I ever have with it, is every once in a blue moon the internal speaker doesn't quite engage for some reason...but a quick fiddle with the volume controls or rarely a reboot fixes that every time. The farm chores I do that would really suck doing are much less brutal when you can listen to a podcast (with ear buds) while doing it. It's how I keep up on Prepared Canadian episodes! 🙂
Runs With Scissors
Thank you for the continued feedback.
Anyone else have an e-Reader?? Do you Like it?? Does it work with PDF's?? Please post your experience.
Thanks,
Mountainman.
I also am in the Kobo camp. I wanted an e-reader that is just that, an e-reader and not trying to be something else.
