and the frustrations I feel right off the bat when everyone cries foul and points at gun control. If the morons sat back and thought for just a second they would see that a gun is just the tool and the weilder of the tool is to blame. This isnt a gun issue, its a mental health issue. There is no cure or solution towards guns or mental health... the answer lies in the people. Somebody somewhere had a gut feeling about this guy and they just let it slide. How many times can you recal walking along and you see some really suspicious freaky deaky dude and wonder what the hell is up with that guy so you stop and watch him for a bit until you either call the cops or feel confident he isnt a threat and you walk away? I can say I have done this many times in my life but I can bet the vast majority of people dont do this. Society is disengaged from one another and thats the problem.

Lets say for just a second that maybe this guy worked at a store and was on cash the day before. Had someone just smiled and gave him a compliment or engaged him in some way... there is a higher chance that this might not have happened. Maybe not but I think, strongly, that if we start interacting with one another we will begin to have less hate crimes.

Oh... and the media. Turn it off.

As for the source of this thread... I agree... as the days count down we will probably see more of this kind of thing. Its innevitable.

Weapons have been around for centuries. Clubs, knives, even stones... What is going on in our world that makes people commit this kind of violence? Too many people? too little contact with the real world (video games, texting, emails)? too many chemicals in our food or water?, the breakdown of the family? It seems that the weapons aren't really the problem. Can society "fix" the problems or will they continue to ignore the bigger problem? In decades past, people had more respect for the belongings of others, the lives of others and the beliefs of others. There have always been some senseless acts of violence throughout history, but what has allowed young people to override the voices inside them that talk about right and wrong? Is it the belief that the world is "done" anyway and it doesn't matter anymore? Any ideas?

Curious question. It does make one wonder.

Isolationism, video gaming, texting, computers, guns, a disengaged society - these answer are too easy. End of days - maybe. The parents will want answers, and no one can or will blame them for wanting to know why!! Why did this sick s.o.b. slaughter the innocent!!! The problem is, the only one who can answer this is also dead.

Will we see more?? I am afraid that we will. The question is, if you see it happening near you, what will you do??

I'm also of the belief that text exchange is no substitute for a phone call nor does face book replace face time. The impact on our society as a whole is obvious to those who remember the time before texting. I feel sorry for a lot of people under 25 who have lost touch with actual 'in the flesh' relationships. How 'convenient' is that?

It is human nature to ostracize a small subsection of the population that doesn't walk lockstep with 'the norm'. Those who frequent this message board would fall into a category of less than 2% of the population. It makes us pretty easy prey for finger pointers.

Mountainman, You said "If you see it happening near you, what will you do?" Well, I know a young man exactly like that. All the warning signs are there, the extreme anti-social behavior, holing up in the house on the computer, etc, etc. I've often thought there's serious trouble brewing, but what can anyone do? It's not against the law to refuse to talk to people, nor to choose to stay inside on the computer. If someone alerts the authorities, what can they do? Someone should look into it, but I doubt the authorities have any legal basis to check his computer or anything. So let's say that because he's not manifesting any illegal behavior, police just decide to go talk with him & his mother... There is the risk of just aggravating, setting him off. I think the mother is embarassed and desperately wants to think the best, but just think, If you cut out 100% of your social interactions, you would necessarily be a very bored, bitter and sick person. There just simply can't be anyway around that. Then, you take a person like that, give them a hole to crawl in with an internet connection, & the sky's the limit on what could be brewing.

Oh Gosh, Odd Duck, that's a terrible situation... I really feel for you & your poor mother. Yes, things are really dire, I do believe that. Yes indeed. And I believe it's only going to get worse.

I am scared the rest of this week will just get worse and worse until we all wake up and are still around on Saturday. My suggestion is do not accept any free kool-aid from anyone over the next few days.

Has anybody else noticed that in the last 2 weeks ammunition dealers have been out of stock in almost everything? Especially common rounds like 7.62x39, .556, and pistol rounds? Feels like everyone with a gun is loading up just in case. I can hardly even find surplus for target shooting! Really putting a damper on my training lol
