LOOOOOOOVE Bulk Barn!
I found them on a road trip down the 401 and didn't even realize we had them in Quebec too!
Went back in today. I'm trying to set up some homemade MRE kits. For $21,95 I got
155g Jolly Ranchers
290g of Chocolate-filled trail mix
160g of Halloween chocolate balls
175g of Mac & Cheese sauce
210 g of macaroni noodles
195g of hot chocolate powder
80g of "Hickory Sticks" potato chips
210g of iced tea mix
105g of green striped mints
75g of sugar packs (About 20)
255g of Sultana raisins
105g of mini chocolate chip cookies
205g of Chicken Soup base powder
125 of blanched, unsalted Virginia peanuts
90g of butter scotch candies
I've got my eye on some Mr. Noodles packs, and the Uncle Ben's rice packs that you can microwave or eat cold. They'll make some great mains aside from the Mac and the Soup. There's some beans and mixes on sale, so I'll have to experiment and find the ones I like. Bulk Barn doesn't have too much in the form of main meals.
Anybody know good ways to incorporate flour or mixes into mre's? I though about some, like pancake mixes, or even basic flour. The pancake mix seems easy enough (Just add water, and as long as you have a flat surface to cook on, good to go), but not sure about other stuff like flour, cornmeal, etc. Ideas?
An excellent item for MRE type meals is couscous. It only requires you to heat the water to boiling once...mix equal amounts of water and couscous and let it absorb. Add a little flavouring and you are good to go. Takes little time and even less energy compared to macaroni type pastas plus you don't discard any water. A win / win.
Neat. I'll have to grab some and try it. I tried the potato flakes(I think I forgot to list them above) and woth one of those pre-packaged butters that last, and it wasn't half bad. Think couscous goes with mac n cheese sauce?
I still like my rice. a bit of butter, pepper and soya sauce. Yum

Don't know about couscous and mac&cheese sauce, but I'll try it tomorrow and let you know.
Does your Bulk Barn sell the plain TVP? If so, a couple teaspoons into a meal goes a long way.
As for the pasta meals, I used 1 cup dry tottillini, 1 tbsp macncheese sauce, 2 tsp powdered milk.
Bring to a boil for about 2 minutes in 1 cup water then cover & simmer until saucy.
No water tossed out and it works OK with some black pepper.
I get bulgur wheat from there. I boil 2 cups of water in the kettle and add it to 1 cup of the bulgur in a plastic container with a lid. Leave it overnight. It becomes soft, kinda like rice or couscous.
The kids and I then eat that for a couple of mornings a week as breakfast. We eat about a third of a cup at a time with some raisins or chopped up apple and brown sugar mixed in. Little of that goes a long way.

love the bulk barn !
What is TVP?
What is TVP?
Textured Vegetable Protien...
little bits of stuff, for lack of a better description, made from soy flour.
Sometimes it is flavored to replace beef, chicken, etc.
The TVP I have seen at Bulk Barn is plain, unflavoured.
