I once won a deluxe car kit from an American company and was surprised to get a bill from Customs Canada for duty that was twice the value of the item won. The problem is that duty is charged not as a kit, but on EVERY INDIVIDUAL ITEM within it. I was told to refuse delivery and that all would be straightened out and that the kit would be reshipped without duty charges. Two years later, I have never seen a thing. Free shipping is great, but there are other considerations for Canadians who wish to import items from the US.

I've found this problem too, but if the items are shipped with USPS not UPS or any other courier it can usually be avoided. Duty and brokerage is a killer on imports.
