Connections

Richard here again, from Whatcom County Preppers in Whatcom County, WA (US). Since my initial post here was in April of last year, I wanted to again extend an invitation to our in-person meetups for those that are interested preppers in the White Rock, Surrey, Abbotsford, Langley, Aberdeen, Aldergrove, Elgin or other surrounding areas (near the border). If this is not possible for someone that is interested, there is still this prepper forum and also our Facebook page to communicate. Below is the link for the Whatcom County Preppers Group on Facebook.

As other BC residents have pointed out to me, there is indeed value in creating and maintaining connections between our group (just as with other US groups near the border of Canada in general), in the spirit of friendship, but also to create more alternative contacts in the event that an emergency situation makes necessary the need for Canadian residents to migrate south---or prompting nearby US residents to migrate north for mutual safety and assistance. Sharing skills or ideas wouldn't hurt either.

Our Whatcom County Preppers group is geared not only toward individual and family safety and preparation in the event of a natural or man-made disaster, but also with a desire to assist others in the area if necessary and possible. I realize that some Preppers have a desire to remain unknown and to do the "lone survivor" thing by severing all contact outside their family. Not everyone feels this way though. And, few have the luxury of a rural retreat to bug out to. Some who must SIP (Shelter in Place) feel that working together is going to be the only way to survive and thrive in the case of an emergency. Let's face it, not everyone is going to have "everything" stocked or available when a SHTF situation arrives. Some will have something another does not have. And chances are, YOU will need something too. In this situation, severing ties, boarding up the windows and spray-painting a middle finger and a gun on your door is perhaps not the best strategy for survival. 😆

We have a Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) program (facilitated and supported by the State) that acts as an interim response team to help your area while waiting for municipal, State and Federal assistance---when and if it becomes necessary. This could be reflected in actions such as checking on the elderly in the area, turning off gas lines or electricity at power boxes, and simply addressing what we can, while still taking care of ourselves and our families. For those that are concerned with SHTF security, this does not involve revealing the existence or volume of your personal "stash" of food and supplies.

I am also interested in building MAG's (Mutual Assistance Groups) locally and regionally. Another organization that I am part of, (in addition to the APN (American Preppers Network) and WPN (Washington Preppers Network), is a national group called A.N.T.S. (Americans Networking To Survive), which is designed for establishing and facilitating assistance networks across the country. They are specifically linked together by a map of the country, and designed to be used to plot long distance bugout routes that have assistance along the way for those Preppers that are in need.

If this concept is of interest to any BC residents in the immediate area of Blaine, WA, please let me know and we can cultivate a mutual assistance relationship/network for this area.

Be prepared and stay safe,
Richard Martin

Do your meetings ever take place on Canadian side of the border?

Hey Preppersaurus
It seems I can't PM you.

If so, we might know one another...

Great question! At this time, they do not. Perhaps in the future we could arrange that, and a bit of a crossover/combined meetup with our BC neighbors.

That would be great! I will let you know when we have the next one. We've been busy with holidays and school starting for the kids and so on. Also, we've been planning for the Whatcom Skillshare Faire in Ferndale (WA) at Hovander Homestead Park this Saturday and Sunday. (10am-11pm Saturday, 10am-6pm Sunday) There will also be food and live music.

The Whatcom SkillShare Faire is a fun festival about teaching and learning all kinds of useful, handy, and practical skills. Years ago, lots of people knew how to repair and sharpen tools, make a braided rug, raise chickens, make soap, build a fence, make simple toys, and much more. The goal of the SkillShare Faire is to help revive those skills, showcase some new ones, and provide a place where all of us can come learn from people more experienced in these crafts and trades.

The Whatcom County Preppers will have a table there to share lots of emergency/disaster preparedness information (brochures, booklets, etc from State and County Emergency Management Division as well as federal EM tips), answer questions, have a few relevant examples of prep items and do a few small giveaways.

I invite our neighbors to the north for this 2nd annual event. Admission is $8 per person per day.
