Just a thought from another post. I am sensitive to wheat. Not gluten it seems, just store bought wheat. This is something that should be looked at while doing any prepping and should be looked into even for everyday. I have suffered from migraine headaches all my life (anyone who has experienced them knows how debilitating they can be). After reading a book on the modern wheat's I figured I'd try eliminating it for a while. That was 6 months ago and I have not had a migraine since, except for the few times I tried battered fish or pizza. I have also discovered that the cholesterol medication that my doctor had me on contained wheat as a fill and had to stop taking that, with a consultation with him.

Apparently, this is a very common problem though most of us don't realize it some of the everyday difficulties we experience are related to this simple food. Try dropping it for a while and see what happens. Might help, might not but it wont hurt to try.

While on the topic of sensitivity, I am allergic to penicillin. I raise my own chickens for the eggs because the amount of penicillin in store bought eggs has adverse affects on me as well. The penicillin is put into the feed because of the way these chickens are raised. If one gets sick they all get sick so it is a preventive measure, at least that is what I was told. This is not to scare anyone away from them, but like wheat, take stock of what you eat, look for correlation between how you feel and what you eat. Drop something for a few weeks and see if it makes a difference then decide if is a possible cause.

These things need to be learned now and any preps you make or have made may need to be rethought.

Those are good tips DogLover. I find storing a wide variety of grains, beans, lentils, rice etc. is the safest way to put food away. You never know when something like that will rear it's head and the middle of an emergency is not the time anyone will want to deal with it. Making things from scratch will also help - no weird chemicals to worry about!

I have terrible problems with store-bought bread, pasta, anything with wheat in it. I bought shares in a grain co-op in Creston. I ended up with about 150lbs and stored it away. I just hand-mill it as I need it. I've had no problems at all with it. I switched to organic veggies, meat, eggs, everything a few years ago. I didn't really notice any difference at the time, but now whenever I have any non-organic food, I feel terrible. The mainstream food supply is really messed up!

Way to true! GMO's and non-GMO food (considered anything changed but selective breeding/harvesting) have really done a number on us and it seems like we are supposed to believe that it is safe. That is perhaps the most frightening thing about the modern wheat (stuff in stores). Because it is a natural product and has been bred with other natural products it is okay for human consumption. Unfortunately this does not seem to be the case as the obesity and diabetes rates can be traced to the mid-80's when the consumer was told to eat more healthy whole grains. Don't miss understand me, this is not the only reason, but it is a very large one. To bad most people are not willing to try dropping it for 30 days and see if it makes a difference. I found the book Wheat Belly to be a good read about this problem. (Just a suggestion 🙂 )

Have a look at the book "Wheat Belly". It is very well written and details the issues with wheat products and gluten. I found it EXTREMELY informative and it makes sense. You may find it helpful.

Hello,

Just saw your post. I too have similar sensitivities and a long history studying nutrition. Most people don't realize that EVERYONE has reactions to wheat. Its just way worse in celiacs. Given time anyone will develop a leaky gut from consumption of wheat since we simply don't have the body to digest it. There are loads of other problem foods such as milk, legumes, and other grains that produce similar reactions in the gut and lead to the proliferation of harmful gut bacteria and leaky gut as well (as well as a whole host of problems in other areas of the body). All these foods depress our immune systems and send our hormones haywire.

Makes you think that we have long odds, with our supposedly 'safe' foods being not so safe eh? Not to mention toxic and unbalancing medications, plastics, toxins, and pollution. Lots to watch out for.

First thing I did years ago as I learned about this stuff was experiment with what would let me operate at my best, and I've cut out loads of food I once thought were good, and I've never been better than I am now on a ketogenic diet. This has a lot of relevance to prepping, because one of our base assumptions is that there won't be the same quantity of food to go around.

Ketogenic diet? Never heard of it, what does it entail?

Yes, paleolithic diet and Atkins diet both make me feel great; I think those are both ketogenic? Whatever they are, they work for me.

I am not wheat free or anything but my sister in law and her youngest is and my dog is now apparently. I babysit my nieces weekly so I have been learning so much about doing wheat free meals and so on and I find since it is a bigger thing now (with the gluten free diets ect..) It is very easy to find wheat free or alternatives these days. I do know I have "reactions" to wheat but I haven't gone to the doc abut it yet. I just have been trying to stay away but I do make all my own breads and it's not as bad I find with the homemade bread except I have to watch how much I eat for sure because I do gain weight or bloat easier, so I have been looking for alternatives. So I have been storing and learning to use other things and started to stock up on gluten free grains also, I am liking rice flour at the moment. Also yes check out Wheat Belly! Very awesome book!

Here's some more food for thought: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvKdYUCUca8

It's a video called The Oiling of America and talks about the diet changes in the last 120 years and the correlation between that and our poor health as North Americans (and others as well)

Great topic!! In the last few years I have been mindful about Glutton intake and notice a complete difference in the way that myself and my family feels. The majority of us are allergic to it but the severity can be so minimal that we do not associate the symptoms with glutton consumption.

Side bar topic: You folks should visit http://farmageddonmovie.com/ and watch this movie. I grew up drinking raw milk, as we lived on a Diary farm outside of Langley and never realized the health impact it had on myself and my family. I thought nothing of it until I watched this
