some food for thought on yourself (or others)

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2012-12-07/guest-post-preppers-who-make-surviving-apocalypse-even-less-fun

1) The Self Assumed “Leader”
2) The Feudal Lord
3) The Moral Relativist
4) The Obsessive
5) The Ulterior Motive Drama Queen
6) The Zealot

And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her;
for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones,...
and slaves, and souls of men.

Everyone possesses at least a few of these traits. What is lacking is the ideal type of prepper or a POSITIVE or IDEAL type to be an example or "role model"

In a nutshell.. It is interesting for sure however;
Posts such as this in my opinion make people look for these traits in others and divides them apart.. We need unity NOT division
CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM

Focus on the positive of people and bring the negative to their attention goes a long way
My 2 cents

a little leaven spoils the whole lump

unfortunately reality tends to overpower dreams and ideals

i think the whole point of the article is unity,
and one way to achieve it is to be wary in a community situation

That is why you prepare now and set up your group now. Joining a group after the SHTF will become a necessity if it the situation drags into months or years. Without being a member of a group you almost certainly are unlikely to survive. Joining any group after the SHTF would be a risky business at best.

Peppers have different goals. Some prep for 72 hours, others for a week or two, some for a month or two and yet others for much longer periods of time. All these preppers have their own plan and are very well prepared compared to the general population. If your plan is a long term plan it must include group. If it does not then you have more planning to do.

i agree ICRCC

a community with at least the goals of safety
and helping each other when needed,
is the only way to fly

even if there are some grating personalities
i include myself in that,
so i like a community of individuals separate until needed
(if that makes sense)

A community may be as loose or as tight as you wish depending on the individual needs, resources and characters involved. First need is a common focus. Prepping and survival comes to mind... 😉 . Another need is recognition. What I mean is prior contact and interaction so each is aware of the other and what they bring to the table. Third is intent. This is the understanding that if the SHTF there will be a getting together or mutual support initiative between those involved. Communication is key. Some method or agreed upon trigger point that the group understands will initiate action. An agreed upon set of SOP.. that is who will be doing what. Differences between loose arrangements and tight arragements as I see it will be flexibility. In the tighter group where defined roles and expectations have been developed and if individuals don't show for one or more reasons gaps and confusion may develop. In a looser arrangement the lack of prior planning may be an asset in that there will be more flexibility. Just a few thoughts.

Excellent post. This is why I am finally reaching out to find other preppers. I would like to meet the prepared in my area to see what types of personalities I may be working with or I can learn from before any type of shtf. I always try to talk to my neighbours when I see an opening for the subject of preparedness -on the west coast it is not too hard to bring up as most people know they should have an earthquake kit -but then I take it a little further if I feel the person is receptive. Although I find some who are receptive to shtf scenarios, they don't really like to sit and talk about the brass tacks of what it would take to survive. I think about the fact that these are going to be the people around me (prepared or not) that I would have to work with if it really came down to it. As I meet more of my neighbours I have often considered the types of people and personalities that would make a community or make a mess when shtf.

I would like to share what I learned in nursing school. There are four things that happen when a group of any kind is formed :Forming, storming, conforming and then norming. Groups form: Based on a common goal or situation, Groups storm: Opinions collide, tempers could get heated, there is jousting for positions in the group (verbal or possibly actual if shtf) some may leave but others stick it out. Then conforming happens: A general consensus is met, or at least a diplomatic way or process is found to deal with differences of opinion or ultimate goals. Finally Norming: People internalize the group goals and find a way to personalize the process while finding their role and niche in the group in order for the group ultimate goals to be reached. Although this is just an abstract theory that generalizes, it will be interesting to see (if I live) how the different personalities will interact when under stress. Everybody knows there is strength in numbers, but it is not just bodies, it is differences of opinions that can strengthen some of the most creative and ultimately successful groups. I hope to be able to be in a sucessful group, or at least have the skills to deal with the different personalities that I may come accross as we all deal with our new reality.

Howdy Creeker Mom,

Welcome to the Forum.

When I went to school we were taught: Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing. But I think they were teaching similar group dynamics, they just changed the names of the stages.

Best of luck in finding a group of like-minded folks in your neck of the woods.

Cheers,

Mountainman.
