3/8" steel bearings are my wrist rocket ammo of choice /// cheaper than commercially packaged purpose sling shot ammo & no identity papers required 😛
As to the original thread, I think you have a fine load out there BetterSafe /// mine is similar, only have a .300 WMag instead of the .270 (we take longer shots out here on the prairies 😆 ) & the addition of a .30-30 for brush work
Why not just buy a true Varey Pistol and save your shot gun. you can pick them up at the second hand marine shops for next to nothing it's the flares that cost. A little tip here look for flares in the marine stores that are coming up on their best before dates. They are to be replaced every 5 years some times the stores have old stock cheeper. Just remeber that flares can start a fire real easy and they are hard to put out.
Be Prepared or it's your own fault.
The OP wanted "realistic choices for a bug in"
Already has a .270 and bolt .22. These are both fine for their purpose, I'll assume he wants to feel better sleeping at night and both these have too much penetration for built up areas but are fine for large and small game.
All you should add is a repeating shotgun to your mix, a pump is probably the best choice here with at least 5 rounds capacity. Go shoot a 12ga before you buy. Light guns combined with heavy loads can beat you up with recoil.
You can get by with a 20 ga with less recoil or even a .410. My petite wife won't shoot a 12 ga comfortably but she has a .410 pump and she's fine with it but ammo is more $. Ammo cost isn't a factor if you aren't shooting hundreds or more rounds per year although you won't be able to pick up your choice loads just anywhere, anytime as you would with a 12 ga. 20's and 410's are just as capable but you'll just have to pre-stock a reasonable amount of ammo.
Perfesser - I'm comfortable shooting 12 gauge, I just don't have one 😉
I want 12 gauge because the ammo is available everywhere, the wide variety of ammo, and it's cheap! And pump is definately the way to go. In an ideal world, I'd get a Remington 870 wingmaster, but that's too pricey for me right now.
Anyone have any recomendations for a reasonably priced 12 gauge pump action shotgun? I've been looking at a Stevens 350...
BetterSafe,
my fav all time shotgun was the Model 1200 Defender Winchester with interchangeable barrels. It was replace with the model 1300 which is virtually the same.
Changing out the barrels from short to longer deer rifled barrel or longer smooth bore for bird shot, took only 30-46 sec (when you practice)
The slide and setup was great, not the lightest but you do not want lightest either. The major mod I did was to work on the wooden fore grip and increase the depth of the rings on the forgrip to my had could feel the grooves and it would be a better faster grip.
Once the shotgun fires, I found my hand already almost fully back with each round downrange so pushing it forward was very fast easy and smooth. I used to beat much higher rated and price shotguns easily in shooting speed and accuracy.
That is my thoughts,
The Remington 870 is also nicely priced and good alternative
The Remington 870 Express is the same guts as the Wingmaster with less cosmetics for a much better price. Usually around $350.00
JAB
As far as I know Remington and Mossberg have the best aftermarket parts available.
Here's one new $320

Maverick 88 Security /// most parts interchangeable with Mossoberg 500 (barrels, ect) /// decent shotty at around $230 - $250
You abbsolutly cant go rong with a 10-22 they can kill up to 400 in a pinch. mine is dead on at 300 3-4" groups they do not have an easy report to pin your location down wile hunting game etc.., a 12ga is probally the gun you would look to most in alot of cases. If you stick to your home/hide I would say the 270 will work but there are much better cals unless you are reloading or have alot on hand. .22 vary cheap to stock up, same as 12ga 270 not so cheap.
I picked up one of these a while back. Haven't tried it out yet but the online vids looked good. It's chinese but similar to the 870. I liked it because it was shorter than my defender. Easier to pack in the bush.

I'm very excited! Just ordered this: http://ca.wholesalesports.com/storefront/firearms/pump-action-shotguns/stevens-350-pump-security-with-rifle-sights/prod296724.html . It's not my dream shotty, but I'd rather have something than nothing. And that price, how can you go wrong? 😉

The best place to get a good cheap shotgun is the gun shows.
As for the Stevens....
From what I have seen they are NOT what you want in a defense situation
Do you really trust a gun tat eats and shits out of the same hole?

Pretty heavy for its size eh!
My buddy has a Stevens 350 pump shotgun and I have seen them in a couple of video's on youtube. They are an ok shotgun but seem to have a habit of dropping shells out of the mag tube when attempting to reload. It is a real pain especially when you expect to have a round in the chamber and all you get is a click. Can you imagine if this happened when being charged by a bear? Attacked by criminals? I personally have a Winchester model 120 scout, It is highly dependable and comes with three chokes. I bought it used for $200 at a gun shop. This gun is now sold new as the Winchester 1200.
