I love the statement: Store what you eat and eat what you store... Its really true.. To radically change your diet in any situation will cause your body to react and not really in a positive way.. So if you are going to store military rations you need to be eating them on a regular basis so you body can adapt. They need to be rotated thru your regular food cache.. Makes sense to me, we grow and raise, hunt and store as much as we can. We live this way as a matter of choice. Which brings me to another point! learning to live a simple life style similar to after the lights go out; means shifting before it happens and learning to live that life style by doing it. Try living for a month in a canadian winter without power and you will realize its a tough place to be even if you are prepared!! yikes did i just say that? 😯

well said, i have to agree. |The only way to know what it is like to live a simple life style is actually doing it.

My husband and I were talking the other day about how difficult it will be for most people who are strapped to their cell phones, Ipods, music always blaring at them, always needing some sort of "stimulation" by electronics/going out with friends/shopping/always "doing" something...most people do not just sit in the quiet of a room and read anymore or do some craft that doesn't involve electricity & some people can not stand being by themselves or not being entertained in some way all the time...When SHTF it will be almost unbearable for the majority of the population we think, especially children of this generation who have little imagination because the things they do for fun mostly involve electronic games ....It is easier to adapt to a simple (quiet) lifestyle now than have it forced on you later and not being able to cope.

When I have things to do, I’m rarely near the computer. I don’t have a cell phone or I Pod, the wife gets frustrated because I can be in a room without music blaring. TV is OK but I find books more entertaining. I have my tools and such to keep me busy, and my mind to keep me entertained. Music is pleasant (sometimes) background noise. I have been call a throwback, but so be it, the history of what we use to do is very entertaining to me, what is being developed today is neat but can become useless without electricity. We are the disposable society, were it cost less to buy new, than it is to fix, if it can be fixed.

Unlike my wife, I will and can eat almost anything, ( except very spicey and curried). My wife is a Brand name buyer, and very selective, I have lived abroad and have tried many different brands. I will and have eaten anything that was not faster than I was, (from ants and grubs to porcupines and squirels). Most time its not what you eat, but the way you prepare them that counts... In other words, learn how to be a creative cook.
