A hurricane watch means that a hurricane or an incipient hurricane condition poses a possible threat to the specified areas within 36 hours.

Details

Tropical storm Maria has strengthened to a hurricane and is now expected to cross the Avalon Peninsula Friday evening. Rain ahead of Maria is expected to begin overnight and become heavy at times on Friday. 60 to 90 millimetres of rain is forecast for the south coast and Southern Avalon with lesser amounts elsewhere. This system will also bring strong winds to most of Eastern Newfoundland on Friday. Southeasterly winds gusting to 80 km/h will develop as the system nears then shift to southwesterly gusting to 100 km/h as it crosses the Avalon.
