When you say "military style" what exactly are you looking for / trying to do?

I carried one of these in the militia... they are heavy and bulky. Just seems like a waste of space with the range and compact nature of GMRS radios available now...I would save the space for more useful items.... Just my opinion.

Our militia unit standardized with yeasu VX170's, great hand held HAM radio and did not take up near the weight and room of a Mil back pack radio. If you really want one any how, try looking into the Military Vehicle Collectors Association. Lots of them guys have the old US M151(A1) series of jeeps, and out fit them to be correct in every aspect. Many of the jeeps were radio jeeps and I have seen them outfitted with the radio gear. Those guys are getting the radios somewhere, they may be able to help. I think their organization is based out of the eastern US like Virginia, or Tennessee. Online search will find them for you. Hope that helps. fg 419

Duffers,
do you want one of these because they might be emp proof? while the FRS system is not?
The one pictured has both tubes and transistors I think, the one I carried was much bigger than this and mostly useless, although it did keep my left ear warm!
Might want to take a look for info that the American fellow Feralgun posted, as for radios like this the only way I can think of getting them would be Military Auctions via the Government site.

maybe email/call one of the war museums??

You might want to consider one of these. With a simple long wire you can cover all of North America on HF, and up to 90 miles on VHF with a simple vertical antenna.
