Went the storm hit my area just over a week ago, I found my cell service as down off and on. My neighbors did not have that issue. I don't know if it was that we have different cell service or I just tried to get on line more then they did. Now I am thinking about getting a satellite phone. I have been doing a bit of reading on the subject. I am hoping for some input by people that own one. The pros & cons, costs, etc.
I was surprised to find out that in some countries satellite phones are illegal.
Sat phones are pretty expensive.
The old Ma Bell landlines are reliable and still work when the power goes out.
Normally that would be the case but the line is still laying across my back yard.
When we moved we had one cell phone carrier and were very disappointed with the coverage and the constant outages out here. We thought we were not going to be able to have cell phones at all. I was out in the field with my phone held high to try and get a signal before our land line was installed 🙂
We switched carriers and - problem solved. We have great coverage anywhere on the property. It's amazing to me the difference in the coverage. My point from this long story is that if all the cell lines go down you're sunk but if it's a localized emergency it may be just one carrier in which case it may be cheaper to have a pay-as-you-go phone from a different carrier for backups than a sat phone.

Sat Phones are a great idea...but in order for the phone to work you need to subscribe to a "sat network" provider...a bit like a cellphone provider in order to be able to communicate....and Sat subscriptions are VERY EXPENSIVE...
I'm not sure what a subscription costs, but I can tell you that I rented a sat phone for a week while my fiancé and I were canoeing in the bush so she could talk to her kids. It cost be almost $200 just for a week!
Hubby just found somewhere online that you can rent these from...so I guess if you wanted a trial run with one before purchasing (I know this is an old post but for anyone else who is interested).
