When I start seeing the northern lights Down here in London (43*N), THEN you know we could be in Trouble. Either that or I'm ten sheets to the wind. Hic 😯

The Northern Lights (aurora) are fantastic right now. The whole sky is pulsing with light. It's a great show.
Three days in a row of active magnetic storms. Now NOAA forecasters think there will be even more and estimate a 40% chance of strong geomagnetic storms during the next 24 hours.
Sunspot AR1598 has now cleared the limb and is starting to point towards Earth. It has erupted four times in the last few days. One of the eruptions had an intense UV flash. Even though it was not pointing in the direction of Earth, this flash impacted the Day side of the Earth, Asia and Australia, and caused some disruption to high frequency radio communications at high latitude locations.
This sunspot does pose a potential threat to communications in the next few days. There is estimated 75% chance of an M class Flare and a 20% chance of an X class flare in the next two days. If it is pointing towards the Earth and erupts as it again with an intense ultraviolet burst the ultraviolet radiation would impact the day side of the Earth within a few minutes again disrupting high frequency radio communications at high latitude locations. If there was a CME associated with the eruption it would take up to three days to reach Earth where it would cause a geomagnetic storm potentially much more damaging than the UV flash.

Yup, something to keep an eye on.
Blinded by the light....

You should hear the 'skip" on 10 meter and 11 Meter( CB) over the past 2 days because of this Solar Activity. Texas and Mexico sound like they are right next door.

Aftrer a few relatively quiet weeks sunspot AR1618 recent eruptions have caused a pair of CMEs to head towards Earth. It is estimated that there is a 65% chance of polar geomagnetic storms on Nov. 23rd.
Really? I only heard about one...
NOAA is expecting G2 (moderate) storm.
From what I understand AR1618 may not be done spewing solar matter at us either.
More activity in the next couple days is possible.
The Sun is a little more active this week. With a total of 167 sunspots there is a good chance of a flare in the next couple of days but probably not a strong one. The CME from two corona holes that are pointing our way should reach Earth by Jan 7-9th.

ACTIVE SUNSPOT: One of the biggest sunspots of the current solar cycle is now turning toward Earth. Named AR1654, the active region is crackling with medium-sized (M-class) flares and could be poised to break the recent spell of calm space weather around our planet. Check http://spaceweather.com for images and updates.

The link to the full story on the Ottawa Sun site was broken and I couldn't find the original article after a (quick) search.
Snap, crackle and pop. 😈

We can expect the CME from an M1 class solar flare that was produced by sunspot number 1692 to reach the Earth on March 17th. Keep an eye out for auroras this weekend.
