We're concentrating on a lot of dry super foods right now, like chia seeds, hemp..etc
Would love some input on what else others are working on..

Having been vegan and/or vegetarian for over 20 years (and now living on a farm with livestock...that we eat) I would add quinoa to the list - high in protein and easy to store. Do you know the storage life of hemp? I love hemp seeds but the moisture content seems high for LT unless you can freeze it which of course could potentially be problematic - I could be wrong tho 🙂

I have about 6 lb of quinoa so far and hemp I store in small canvas bags instead of plastic, lasts a lot longer.

I don't use plastic either - I use glass jars for almost everything! I would probably vacuum seal the hemp - safe from bugs and extend the shelf life. I guess it also depends on how long you are planning to keep it. Hemp seeds don't last very long around here!!! yum!

I store quinoa in mylar with O2 absorbers. It's on the expensive side so I don't have much stored.

I need to find a way to store raw almonds or find an alternative. We drink almond milk and I know you can make it but the almonds don't have an extended shelf life either. I've looked at oat milk but it doesn't sound as tasty and of course no calcium either. We've already decided a cow is too much trouble but maybe a goat is in our future - but that doesn't help y'all vegans 🙂

We're also storing lots of vitamins and supplements and looking at non-traditional foods and herbs to provide the necessary nutrients.

We have a few lb of raw almonds, we store them in hemp bags... we drink a lot of almond milk and sometimes organic soy, I bought a few tetra boxes on sale, they last about 1 year.

My wife and I stock up on trail mix (45-50 lbs at any given time). We use this quite often while camping, endurance running, bike touring, as everyday snacks and even snowboarding. These are usually mixed cashews, almonds, nuts, M&Ms, and walnuts. She adds raisins to her mix, while I hate that stuff.

For meals, lentils are my best friend - it keeps me full for very long periods of time, it is high in protein, fiber as well as carbs. I rotate through 3 sacks of lentils. You can make it into a soup, curry, tomato sauce, or simply boil it and eat it alongside a regular meal like rice or mashed potatoes. Keep at least a few dozen canned lentils on hand, as these are already pre-cooked and can be eaten straight out of the can if you somehow end up in a position where you can't use fire.

Other must haves are quinoa, as anita mentioned, as it's very high in protein.

Lastly, rice. Lots and lots of white rice. Rice is another one of those staples that can be eaten raw, but you need to be very - very - cautious not to overeat because it will expand. Two to three tablespoons of raw rice are more than enough to keep me going for 6 hours when starting a fire is not advisable (hiking/camping in a blizzard, or trying to make it to a campsite before sunset, etc). You can soak some rice in water overnight, too. Works like a charm. 50 kg of rice will go a very long way as part of any food prep, and if stored properly can last 25-30 years.

Rabbit, what do you mean eat rice raw?
do you mean shake out of box or bag and chew on the very raw hard bits?

It's easy to just soak raw rice overnight 🙂 Thanks for the replies, everyone

Hi WildernessReturn - I mean you can eat rice straight out of the sack, raw and hard. No need to chew. We had to do that for three whole days after we ran out of rations, in monsoon season (which made it impossible to start a fire in a rainforest). Our lt. colonel promised us an air drop 35km from base for a bit of a workout, but then secretly dropped us off 40 miles (60km) further. I hated him then, but we're good friends now.

Just a few precautions to follow: 1 - rice expands in your stomach so don't eat a whole cup of raw white rice, eat like... 2-3 tablespoons at most, and wait 2-3 hours before ingesting more. 2 - if you don't have to, then don't do it, because if it is dirty or you don't know the source, it could have a lot of bacteria on it. 3 - if you can afford to, just soak it in water overnight to soften it up.

TorontoGrl - give us an update or something - I'm always curious what my fellow vegetarian/vegan preppers have done to prep. 🙂

RabbitTeeth, you inspired me to try raw rice, it's not bad at all, also it looks like Japanese rice is softens in water much faster than your average long grain rice, I'll try basmati rice next to see which one is the most efficient for preparation 🙂
I bought 5 gallons of cranberry juice today, good for 2 years and great if you develop infections, good for healing, I also bought 1 kg of dry unsweetened cranberries, my stash is growing 🙂
Wish my husband was into helping, all the household prepping is done by me... booo

One of the things that I learned years ago, is that if you half cook rice with sea salt and it has to be sea salt because it is the key that unlocks all the nutrients in rice, you can survive, work, travel, for days with only a handful a day.Don't take my word for it, look it up under macrobiotics. In my pack I always have a bag of rice, and sea salt, along time ago I was taught, you don't need a plate, and to eat now taste it later. Rice is the only grain that will sustain life all on it's own.

Chia seeds are much more nutritious than rice, don't have to be cooked and provide full day nutrition (including Omega 3's) from just 4 table spoons 🙂
