I have been debating buying a Costco membership because I hear so many preppers talking about shopping there. I've been there several times as a guest but now enough to know what the really good deals are. Right now I shop the sales flyers of regular grocery stores and buy in bulk. Will I save any money by shopping there? (I know the answer will depend on if I can discipline myself not to go overboard!)
What specific things do you purchase there that make the trip worthwhile??
For example I have bought boxed potatoes. The ingredients listed were potatoes and salt. That's it - no chemicals or additives. It's convenient and the price per serving was pretty good.
Your thoughts??

It really depends on what they have at the time, but some of the regular items are...
sugar
otc meds (tylenol, alieve, vitamins)
seasonal clothing can usually be found for good prices too.
Oddly enough, these items are never a good deal...
Bathroom tissue
canned food (some exceptions)
Meat
We had a membership but I tracked it hard and between the membership fee, and the gas costs, to get to the closest one, right around 50 min drive on a good day each way, they eat any and all savings, even though I tried to make it only once every month trip in or every two months.
Very interesting about the OTC meds, and sugar..

nothing....I don't shop there. I gave up my membership years ago but I heard they sell gas at about 5 cents below the average gas station.
I dunno, I buy tonnes there...it's only 10 mins away, and I am usually there every week or two at most...Milk, bread, cases of soup, Chicke/Beef broth, batteries, 12 pack of chicken breast...loads of stuff, and compared to Safeway, SuperStore etc, it is a lot cheaper.
It is also easier when you go often to keep that pantry full and stocked.
Mind you I am not much of a bargain shopper, and suppose if I looked around I could find better prices with on sale stuff, but this is one stop, convenient and keeps the cupboards full.
We aslo have an executive membership, which costs us about $135 per year, but we get a refund cheque every year at same time membership is up...This years (which is lower than usual) we received $185 rebate, so paid for membership and $50 extra that I threw into canned supply and pasta...IT is also great to grab stuff online, which is not available at stores like Thrive Dehydrated items, Soldier Bars, etc...all with Free shipping, and you can pay in multiple ways as opposed to just debit/Amex at the till.
Cheers

I have an Executive Membership, I think it costs around $110. It gives 2% cash back. The closest Costco is a 2 1/2 hour drive one way so we only go every three months or so. If I am travelling anywhere in the sunny south I always work a Costco visit into the trip. When we go we (I) spend a lot and we have received back much more than the cost of the card for at least the last few years. I think it is a really good deal.
They have the best price for refilling propane tanks that I have found anywhere.
Ahhh yes, the $400 club.
Some marketing guy told me Costco is all about quality bulk stuff, not cheap bulk stuff.
Yes the propane refills, cheapest quinoi I ever found, bulk packs of all kinds of stuff, gallon cans of Heinz. Nuts, dried fruits. Cooking oil. No tea? Tons of coffee. Laundry soaps, dishwasher detergent, paper towels ...
Surprising local veggies, limited selection though. Local pickerel fillets !!!! Lake Simcoe harvest I'm guessing - always on the lookout for those.
LED light bulbs, great LED flashlights.
If you can make the Executive Membership work, then Costco is absolutely worth it. Last year we got a cheque that not only covered the membership renewal, but we got a cheque for more than $100 extra to spend on stuff. We timed our membership accidentally to get our annual cheque in December, so I was able to pay for most Christmas gifts with that Costco cheque as well as renew our membership.
Like others have already said - propane, prescriptions, and lots of food. We shop the sales as part of our preps - that's when you can really save the big $. If you don't have the means to hold the bulk purchases, I can see it's not worth it, but for us, it definitely is!
If life hands you lemons, be sure you have a battery backed up juicer to make some good ol' fashioned lemonade! 😉
Propane, top quality meat, baked goods, rice, spices, and pharmaceuticals. And with the Exec membership, you can't go wrong

A post right down my alley. First off I only buy sale items at Costco and I have all but memorized what items go on sale when and how often during the year. I am of German and Russian decent and have apparently inherited the frugal gene.
Things we buy 6 months of one product at a time when on sale. Our monthly bill is about $700 or so for a family of four (including clothes/undies/fuel etc). Our savings on the bottom of receipt averages about 10-12% of the bill and as high as 30%. We actually fill up at Superstore when in the city since our PC Mastercard gets us 7c superbucks off per liter plus the usual 2c off posted anywhere else. Costco is between 5-9c depending what day it is and how the wind blows. We do not have propane at our Costco but I wish we did. We live 30 minutes away and make weekly trips. Heck I save at least the price of fuel and then some on their weekly deals for stuff we buy anyway.
I think that coscto is very important to a prepper. If your going to buy in bulk you might as well get good quality. I buy dried fruits - mango is yummy, yeast, sugar, flour is cheap, canned goods, pasta and of course..... you knows it , CHEESE! Ya that's right Costco preppers, the best cheese on the planet!
Wow - I think we could start our own Costco fan club! That was exactly what I needed to know 🙂

I love Costco. I buy my meat bulk then vacueseal it into individual portions that will last this bachorette for months. Medications are super cheap, a massive bottle of store brand, back medicine saves me nearly a 100$. That alone makes Costco worth it. I buy massive flats of water, huge packs of batteries, and my veggies. Often what I get is too much for just me and I'll split the cost with my parents, and we can cut our expenses down. For example lemon juice they sell in pairs. Ones enough to last me months so split the cost and share with my mom and dad.
If just getting the membership for yourself is too much get a shopping buddy that will make the trip with you. I'm lucky enough to have one nearby
Not every thing at Costco is cheaper, before you got Costco bring with you a bunch of fliers with you (not the aviation type). Although when we can We buy our beef from there and I cut my own steaks. On another note, Kirkland kitchen catchers( white kitchen garbage bags), 2 rolls in a box, 320 bags. For us that's 3-1/2 years of bags.
