I have just planted some Kidney Beans and Chickpeas, only a small amount at present to see how they go with view to planting a larger amount for long term storage.
I was thinking of growing some French Green Lentils but I read on a blog recently "We would have to plant out the whole garden to get enough to make one meal for the guests."
I wonder if I will have the same problem with the chickpeas...having to plant acres just to store 10kg phew it just wouldn't be worth the effort!
Has anyone tried growing the 'staple' foods rather than just the veggies ????
Was Thinking of that myself Cares - until I came accross this;

Please let me know how you went with growing them?
I'm old, tired and crotchety - what's your excuse???
I have grown chickpea's and I felt tha the crop was compareable to growoing the drying beans, certanly useful if you are wanting to add a bit of bean to the soup/stew pots, a bit of different for side dishes, mixed with the rice for a complete meal and when combined with growing and raising other kinds of basic's (potato's, sweet potato's, carrots, beets, turnips, cabbage, winter squashes), its well worth it, however I will point out that even if you grow a hundred food row of these and a couple other beans etc, that you might want to invest in a hand cranked sheller, and still be prepared to spend a good amount of time sorting etc, otherwise the time spent shelling out dried beans and pea's is very much a long term evening project.

Thanks for the link neighbour 😀
I spend a good deal of my evenings doing things like shelling etc...no TV means we do odd things for entertainment 😉
I have planted out a small area of 4m x 2m to see how the chickpeas go...I love the comment in the article FNQ about the hilly ground not being suitable, every direction I turn there is a hill 😆
The kidney beans are planted below a frame 4m long.
Will let ya know how I get on with them.
