Hey Farmgal. MrsC5 asked me to ask you, How much milk do you get per day from a single sheep. Its peaked here interest. We recently made a contract with a friend at a biodynamic farm near by, to get a single goats milk for a year and a half.(Pricy. Oh, the cost of real food versus the fake stuff on the shelves) Its looking like it will be more milk than we need...so we would like to compare it to the sheep option.
I have a Tactical Harness and I have a Tool Belt. The Tool Belt is more Useful.
If you can find a milking sheep (which I am still unsuccessful, I thought I had a lead on one this year.. sigh), they say you can get up to a gallon of milk per milking but as I have hair sheep that are milky, I tend to get around a quart per, but keep in mind that I am share milking with lamb or lambs.
So I am getting less that way, then if I pulled the lambs and milked her out twice a day, but that would mean that if you share milked till weaning time, you should get a min of one liter, now the thing to keep in mind with sheep milks, is that its rich, very rich, as in unless you like drinking cream, you will want to cut it with water to drink, it can be cut with water for baking, and cooking as well..
And as milk goes, it has the highest amounts of solids, so when you make yogurt, cheese etc, you get good volumes, it shocked me when I was using the cows milk, how much I used for so little because I was used to the sheep milk. They have a good milking curve, same as goats if you are feeding well and milking steady.
If you have more questions, feel free to ask and I will do my best.
