This site is pretty interesting. Some neat and practical survival huts. They are basic and straight from the earth.

Interesting for warm weather shelters, but for most Canadian climates its little more than a deep freeze to keep your body until they find it

I have to agree with the Phone Guy. These are more shelters than huts. To open for the summer the black flies and mosquitoes would enjoy the free lunch. Totally inadequate for the winter. After keeping the fire going for 48 hours of so you would fall asleep from exhaustion not to wake up again

Shelters are right, Make the walls out of waddle, with straw and mud, then you have a hut. Birch bark for the primary roofing with sod on top will keep most of the elements out. Then build a biomass heater and Bobs you uncle.

I'm not convinced that huts would be anything more than temporary here in Canada.
And besides that...Bob's actually my brother in law.

This one is closer to my idea of a hut http://www.tinyhousetalk.com/living-single-tiny-house/#more-10422
or this one http://www.tinyhousetalk.com/tiny-log-cabin-on-a-trailer/

Actually for those of us living in the more northern regions, everything is in the rough, but it doesn't mean you can't make the conditions comfortable. Unless you have something to prove to yourself, that is.

We have plenty of people who spend most of their time outdoors, including Guides, Trappers, etc, and they certainly don't spend their nights in survival shelters. They're cozy in their cabins, campers, or trailers.
