I just finished making a list of the contents of my Bug Out Bin or Evac Bin for my prep binder to go along with my list of pantry items. I am feeling motivated to tweek it, fix some of the weak areas. Right off the bat you will notice that I'm really weak in First Aid and Fire Arms. The Bug Out Bags each have little first aid kits, so we are not completely without items, but the bin needs improvement. As far as fire arms go... well that's not likely to change/improve, the ba5tards'll just have to get close enough so that I can beat them to death with my crow bar. 😆

Here is a city girl's version of a bug out bag (we're only expecting to get as far as our local evac centre or if we're lucky, set up camp at grampa's house. (I'm only bugging out if our condo doesn't survive the big one. I'm not expecting, nor planning for, 'the complete fall of civilization' in our locale.)

Blanket & towel roll

1 litre of water in metal sport bottle w/ attached mini LED flashlight, whistle, retracting mini-blade, zippered pouch w/ $20 (in $1, $2, $5, + 4 quarters), 20m of yellow poly rope.

Zippered nylon pencil bag w/ manual can opener, metal cutlery, small paring knife wrapped in J-cloth.

Glad bag of toiletries: roll of t.p., 2 pocket packs of kleenex, pack of pre-moistened facial wipes, travel sized bottles of sunscreen, shampoo & conditioner, Q-tips, dental floss, toothbrush and paste, feminine hygiene pads.

Glad bag w/ 50 (one litre) water purification tablets, Afterbite, eyedrops, Advil, Eno, dozen assorted bandaids, dozen alcohol swabs, basic 1st aid booklet.

Stainless Steel camping mug

Glad bag w/ cheapo plastic rain poncho, 2 dust masks, mylar 'space' blanket, 2 note pads, 1 felt pen, 4 thumb tacks (for posting messages), work gloves, 4 disposable hand warmers, tiny scissors, dozen large safety pins, packet of matches and 6 tea-lights, pack of 4 spare batteries for flashlight.

Snacks: 2 small tins of flavoured tuna (lemon & pepper, sundried tomato & basil), 3 cup-a-soups (assorted), 20 chewable vitamin C tablets, 4 Emergen-C drink packets, 3 packets of trail mix, 14 chocolate calcium chews, 3 fruit leathers, 3 assorted instant oatmeals, 3 cereal bars, a couple hard candys.

Need: more water, t.p. & pads, spare underwear & sox.

I didn't want it to be too heavy as I'm sure my daughter would also be wanting to carry her laptop bag, e-reader and purse, at the very least. My backpack is heavier, plus I'm in charge of the cat carrier.
Here's hoping we never have to use them.

Impressive 🙂

My own Preps are focused Primarily around Bugging In but I did buy a Commercial 4 person 72 Hour Bug Out Bag that I'm personalizing for my own personal use so in theory it should be a one person 12 day kit (but somehow I doubt that).

I'm still customizing it. It's a Constant, yet casual, work in progress.

I keep one in the front closet of my apartment, although I tend to transfer it into the car for winters. I use a 60L hiking pack I bought on sale at Canadian Tire, and there's lots of room left in the bag for additional items. It's also comfortable to wear, I 'tested' it by filling it with 50lbs of random stuff, strapped it on and cleaned my place top to bottom. A little awkward in spots, but generally doable.

Hand sanitizer

Good lists, guys.
Aphrael: great 1st aid stuff.
Gave me some good ideas and reminders.

Tonight I recorded all the stuff in my Bug out Bag, as the mom I put myself in charge of more stuff.

Stainless Steel camping mug w/ 12 tea lights

Nylon pencil case w/ manual can opener, metal spoon, fork, knife, paring knife.

First Aid bag: Clove Oil (for toothaches), Orajel, Polysporin, acetaminophen 500mg, tea tree oil, neem oil, hand sanitizer, handful of Q-tips, witch hazel, scissors, dental floss, facial pads, 1st aid tape, iodine tincture, mirror, tylenol 500mg, 2 tweezers, Eno, digestive enzymes, dozen each medium and large safety pins, lots of assorted bandaids, St. Johns Ambulance First Aid booklet.

Bag: work gloves, dozen dust masks, dozen large black garbage bags, 2 'space' blankets, 9x12 plastic drop cloth, strike anywhere matches 4 of 40 ea., felt marker, note book.

Food: 4 small tins assorted tuna, dozen tea-bags, dozen Emergen-C drink mix, 14 Oxo beef bouillon packets, 6 Cup-a-Soups,4 fruit leather, 4 instant oatmeal, dozen assorted cereal/granola bars, 40 one cup coffee/tea filters w/ holder, 1 litre of water, Vitamins in a Sat to Sun container

Crank flashlight/cell phone charger
Folding knife
Poker dice

Bag of toiletries: shampoo, dental floss, toothpaste & toothbrush, 4 pr. foam earplugs, 50 pre-moistened wipes, 6 single sized Colgate for giving away, 4 pocket packs of kleenex, 6 spare underwear, 4 pr. dark sox.

I would also grab my purse on the way out the door, it contains phone numbers, insurance papers, $100 in cash mostly 5s. There is also a few random stuff like a couple of dust masks, a flashlight and spare batteries, mirror.

This has been a good exercise, I see a lot of gaping holes in my plans, like I want to get some of those filtering bottles for water. Where we are I don't expect a shortage of water, but I would like to know that it's clean. I also will move a couple things, I'm going to take the multi-tool from the big bin and put it in the backpack. Well, I'm going to warm up the printer and put another page into the prep binder.

The b.o.b and other preps are still in the works but we began assembling/doing an inventory on the start of our b.o.b last night- only a partial small list for now till we gather/buy the rest of the supplies. I love this topic as everyone sharing is giving me reminders on additional supplies or things I might have forgotten.

Heavy duty hiker backpack:

8 rain ponchos ( Dollar store variety to be replaced with real rain gear)
5 pairs socks
lg sewing kit
50' rope
25' roll of twine
4 pairs of reading glasses ( we are great far-sighted but blind if we need to read anything, especially labels!)
toothpaste, picks, brushes
folding scissors
gerber (multi-tool)
4 rolls t.p.
lg bottle advil liquid gels
tweezers
4 packets dry soup ( 4 servings a package)
16 granola bars
16 individual packages tea
LCD flashlight
2 bars soap
no-sew buttons ( lapel-pin style (great for an instant fix when you lose a button on jeans etc)
5 Dust masks

We have a quite a ways to go, we have some holes big enough to drive through but at least it is up and going now! We hit 3 stores yesterday trying to find water purification tabs, and all 3 were sold out!

Vanislemom, I loved the Canadian flag!! 😀

Important: DO NOT store anything plastic in your "fireproof" document safe, they are meant only to keep paper items from combusting but get hot enough to melt any plastic items! (Which can also burn up all your paper items.)

Our plan is to bug-in except in the case of potential or actual home destruction by fire or weather, our "bug out" items are fairly spread out but easily accessible:

We have full-on camping equipment stored in a "deck box" in our garage right by our back door--tents/tarps, wind/rain/screen shelter, propane camp stove and Coleman stove-top oven, water carrier and bleach, dishes/pots/pans/utensils, bucket toilet kit, even an easy to pack/carry box of card games/Yahtzee/Scrabble/travel games like Battleship.

Year-round each of our vehicles contains: a tarp, blanket, sandbag, folding emergency stove and sterno, matches/flint & steel, first aid kit, small shovel and snowbrush/scraper, wind-up flashlights, jumper cables, 6x 1 litre bottles of water, a pair of socks for each family member, gloves and toques, and glove box full of maps, gum and non perishable snacks in it. There's also usually various pairs of shoes/flipflops, hoodies/jackets, and other miscellaneous forgotten items in each car.

Each teen has an emergency kit bag (fits into their school packs if they need to move) in their lockers at school in case they get stuck there due to blizzard or similar event, hubs has a similar kit at work. Each kit contains: Toothbrush, Soap, Washcloth tablets, Sanitary pads, Wet wipes, Hand sanitizer, Q-tips, Tissues, Flashlight/batteries, Hand-warmers, matches, candle, Gloves, toque, socks, First Aid kit, gloves, Tylenol, Emergency blanket, Sewing kit, tape, Notebook/pen, deck of cards, City map, coins, contact list, 6 Water bottles, Granola Bars, Trail Mix/nuts, Fruit Leather, Fruit Cups, Spoon and Fork (no knife at school--weapon issues) and P38 can opener. They each already have a change of clothing (gym strip: track pants, shorts, t-shirt, sweatshirt, running shoes) and always take an appropriate jacket plus hoodie in their school packs. Hubs also has a hand-crank radio and work gloves in his kit.

My purse is my "everyday carry" emergency kit and contains most of what is in the teens and hubs' kit except for the food, since I work at home and have easy access to food and water supplies. I am the keeper of the family documents (passports, birth certificates, SIN cards, mortgage and insurance documents, and wills. We also have copies of each of these in our safety deposit box and also, strangely enough, in a doubled up ziploc bags in the middle of our chest freezer (freezers usually survive home fires). Each person has a contact list of all family members (local and out of town) in his/her wallet and also in the emergency kits I noted above.
