My hubby loves boats and we do have the hull of a lovely 18 footer in the yard, waiting for some loving. He's also been very supportive of my prepping and helps in any way I ask.

Today he found this article: http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/12/columns/guest/zeiger/index.html

Bug out Boat! 💡
The idea is to be away from land for 6 months, which would be time enough for some things to settle I imagine.
So - there are more options to bugging out than I thought. 😀

And hubby now has another reason to get working on that hull. 😉

Bug out boat, cool idea. Just as long as you remember that Canadian lakes have an unfortunate tendancy to freeze up in the winter. Hopefully you've got a place to park the boat in the event of freeze-up. 😎

I have actually kind of thought of this in a way. Mainly just a thought, funds would not allow it at all right now but I would defiantly consider it in the future. mainly because I am on vancouver island. Being on an island i guess is the selling point. You hear so many things about vancouver island. Like the possibility of earthquake, the fact is slowing getting further and further away from the mainland, ive hear people say its sinking slowly and so on and so on. You never know though. also if anything did happen here and people had to evacuate the island how packed the fairies would be! Id rather jump on my own boat and set sail! =)

The perfect bug out boat is a Macgregor sailboat. Trailerable, drop keel, water ballast tanks, very shallow draft when keel is up, and has a 50hp outboard that will get it up on plane and do 20 knots! You just don't get that in any other sailboat.

Silly me, being born and raised on the prairies, I assumed freshwater not salt. 😕 Just another example of what assume means. 😳 I do have one question though. Can you fit six months worth of stockpiles onto an 18 foot sailboat? All I know about boats is that you don't stand up in a canoe on a fast stream. 🙄

Lol flatlander! No you can't fit 1 month on a 18 footer! And 6 months offshore is not for everyone! Fresh or salt!
I picture trying to hang out for 6 months on an Albertan lake, people would be hollerin from shore ' hey what are you doing out there'

Flatlander, FLATLANDER! I resemble that statement. I'll have you know sir, that I once had to walk around a hill because it was too far to walk over, flatlander indeed, humph. 😆 😆

From my perspective, being a paddler for the last 35 years and counting , my bug out boat but would be a good, solid wilderness tripping canoe. Here in Canada, you can get most anywhere by canoe, following the old traditional trade routes. As a quick example, in 2004 I did a solo canoe trip, leaving from the northern BC coast, destined for Montreal.
If things got really bad, I'd rather be on the rivers and lakes than the highways after a complete collapse.
