Our "bathroom" needs are taken care of with a bucket toilet (from Canadian Tire) and kitchen waste bags plus some "septic" bacteria packets (also from CT) that guarantee to liquify the contents of portable toilets so we can dispose of the contents in a pit in the back yard. DON'T use kitty litter, it is difficult to dispose of, but the sawdust suggestion is a great one as it is what is used in composting toilets and really keeps odours down, check out these two videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHECRDlbUPg and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7QtF1D4tpo&feature=related (the second part shows the composting toilet).
A couple more tips:
Store more water than you think you need, unless you have an alternate source (we have access to well water).
Store more *variety* of food than most sites recommend to avoid boredom, and rotate your stores by using them on a regular basis--which also teaches you what to do with all that wheat and other dry goods. 😉
One of the things I've been doing, especially since the Japan earthquake, is reducing the amount of glass I have, particularly in the kitchen. For instance, I have replaced glass mixing bowls with stainless steel ones. All my storage containers are plastic. I have a couple glass things (jam, wine) in the fridge, but I found neoprene beverage covers at the dollar store for the jam, and I made a couple of quilted covers for wine bottles.
I have always lined my cupboards with anti-slip matting that you can get at the dollar store. (Use a white or beige as the darker the colours are less sticky.) But recently have started using it on the back half of my counters for small stuff that might slip around during a survivable earthquake.
That was one of the first things I did as well here. It is all about stainless steel and plastic in our home! 😀
There would be enough broken glass to deal with from windows/mirrors etc. The same goes for our food storage and pantry...almost
zero glass. The one exception is some yummy sauces packed away that are in small jars in zip locks nestled amongst other 'soft' food items in a tote.
I was amazed at how many glass tabletops, end tables etc are being offered for free on craigslist, not sure if it is due to trend or people not wanting glass in their home in an earthquake zone.
