Where's the love?

Hey lets get back on track : How do you defend your home??

I have a Samoan war club under my bed.

Failing that I just got 2 new additions to the gun locker! Can't wait to get to the range this weekend to try them out!

As I mentioned in a previous post Home security has been on my mind lately. I don't anticipate any Mad Max scenerio any time soon, although a SHTF scenerio is what we need to prepare for in the long term, I think something more along the lines of the Montreal Ice/Snow storm is most likely for my area.

so Home invasion/Looting are my main concerns for preparation/Security. Along these Lines I am looking at hardening my entrances with something similiar to the Door Devil ( http://www.doordevil.com/ ). Hoping I can find something along these lines north of the border. For another door that won't accomidate this hardware I'm looking at a number of L brackets and a few lenths of 2x6's (lumber) just to store and keep close at hand. This way in a Grid Down/Looting scenerio it will only take a few minutes to install the brackets on each side of the door (with a battery powered Drill) and place the 2x6's across the entrance effectively preventing any entry.

Should an intruder choose to come in through a window after failing to gain entrance through a door, well then all bets are off and I have to use some of the more violent methods mentioned by others in this thread, but in all likelihood, outdoor solar lighting and making unauthorized entry to a home a little more difficult should be enough to discourage most intruders in a Temporary Grid Down/Home Invasion situation.

I was actually robbed during the ice storm...I was a superintendant and they were after(and found) rent money paid by other tennants. I know who it was and they were watching for when I went to the store for some more candles. Now I have 2 very good security measures. A 55 lb pitbull/boxer mix and a 120 lb huskey. You may be able to get into my house, but you likely won't get out(at least not in one piece. Both dogs bark loudly when faced with strangers on the property and are very loyal. Getting back to the robery...if I hadn't left the apartment, I would not have been robbed. Standing guard and having lighting during grid down is definitly a good deterrent. I know standing guard 24/7 is not doable for most, so this is where a dog comes in handy.

Mad Max..
are you kidding me! Just look to the Canadian news alone, those are complete idiots, zombies out there.
Stanley Cup Riots
power outage riots and looting
black friday stampedes,
black friday pepper spraying others
ice storm robberies
Christmas day robberies
daily road rage scenarios in TO and other large cities involving guns, knives and tire irons
home invasions, now!

As an Ex Soldier,
I have seen what normal everyday people do when faced with Opposition, no food, martial law, civil unrest.
Sorry folks you need to prep for all contingencies, hopefully none of them will come to pass, you had better hope.

where did you get the Samoan club, those are good for home defence in hallways, just like the old backalite telephones.
Dogs, yes, I am going to look at a shelter/rescue Mastiff tomorrow. Wish me luck, she is 1.5 yr old abandoned Cane Corso, the speckled pattern variety, forget the actual name for it. She weighs about 90 lbs now, and when she fully matures at about age 3.5-4 probably will weigh about 110-120 lbs.

My daughter has adopted 2 rescue dogs who are worth their weight in gold. One is a rotti/boxer cross. Gentle as the day is long but one night at 4 AM when someone was breaking into a vehicle in the driveway across the street, she sensed it or heard in even while being in the back bedroom of the house. My daughter's fiance awoke to her pacing and the most menacing growl he had ever heard, left the bedroom with her and she immediately ran to the the front door. He held onto her and went outside, surprising the thief across the street. She was barking and growling viciously in a fashion he had never seen, foaming at the mouth and the guy took off and it took brute strength for my daughter's fiance to hold her back. She wanted to go after the thief and eat him..

Guy gone, she slowly subsided and went back to being a big goofy dog.
I was amazed at how much she 'sensed' this as she was in the back bedroom and this was taking place outside of the front of the house and across the street. Nice.

I was always sure my old two wee mutts ( both passed on now) could have been bought for the price of a milk-bone and a pat on the head ...but on the other hand, they made a massive uproar with their insane barking if anyone even came near our house. 😉
If affordable, dogs are a great investment.

Daisy, we do not have property rights entrenched in the Canadian Constitution therefore, you have no right to protect it.....legally. You can legally protect yourself if you happen to be at home. In a true SHTF scenario I can't get out of my mind what a Premier once said about BSE in cattle. Shoot, shovel and shutup.

What exactly is a samoan club? I tried to look that one up and it kept giving me samoan nightclubs..lol
(*Post Edit* Googled this under images and found them. My fiance has a big old nasty walking stick with a heavy bulbous end, he calls it his ugly stick and keeps it beside our bed.)

I have pondered defense myself being in a third floor apartment at the moment. I really liked the suggestion of the ornamental grills for the windows and I have devoted some time to figuring out what I would do to bolster the adjoining apartment walls, making the balcony inaccessible and strengthening my apartment door. My strongest desire is to not be in this apartment by mid year, but if I am, I want to have a contingency plan in place.

Paintergirl, google hawaiian war club and check images. I would give someone swinging that a wide berth.

To the people who recommend dogs. One piece of advice..keep them well fed. I used to own two Dobermans and tried an experiment. I disguised myself and tried to break in to my own home. It was not going well, the dogs were doing what they were supposed to, until I threw a raw steak into the corner. Dogs have their own priorities.

A suggestion or two:

- Don't count on equipment or fortifications. They are not useless, but they won't really protect you from much for long. The strongest doors can be broken in, cut, have a car driven through. If you want to break in you can often cut through walls and roofs where alarms aren't focused, or when the power is out. Passive is fine, but won't cut it when it counts.

- Do count on people: the best ideas are dogs and people. A multifamily home that is lived in 24/7, with big dogs are the least likely to be targeted. If things get bad, at least the unemployed can be at home working a garden and keeping an eye out with man's best friend. When sleeping, dogs keep one eye open. Active and reactive defense like living people and annimals will do the trick with reasonable preps.

** Remember to stock up on dog food!!!!

A Samoan war club is a beating stick from Samoa. There is many different versions of beating sticks stretching from Hawaii to New Zealand. My Mum lives in Samoa (not Samoan) and exports Samoan crafts. I went there a few years ago and it was pretty cool to see how these people still live a traditional lifestyle. Here's her website to see what the clubs look like,

Have one of these babies in your hand while charging an intruder screaming bloody murder should send them running!

True war clubs are pretty cool, are excellent for ornamentation and could be used if needed.I hope what I quoted was written for style. If so, fine, but it is not good advice for real self defense and does a disservice to readers of this forum whos attention is turned from more valuable pursuits. To me sentences like this perpetuate the myth of the puffer fish. That you can scare intruders away if you only blow yourself up and look scary. Self defense is about cultivating the mindset and capability to quickly end any threat to yourself or a loved ones. They weren't scared enough to not break into your house. Why would they be scared when they confront you? If they run when confronted, great and count yourself lucky. If they don't, are you prepared to end the threat?

You have to be prepared to follow through because presenting a weapon is an escalation of the level of violence. Do you know how to use a war club to beat someone to death? A blade is a better choice, lighter, faster and smaller/off hits are more deadly. They require less strength and no "swing" in confined spaces. A blade is several degrees a better choice, and every kitchen has one. A gun is better.

A gun is better and everyone should be trained to use one safely.

The best Weapon is your own Mind
The second best weapon is your body

Everyone needs to learn as much about as many different things as they can before the need to use defensive and offensive moves, weapons and reactions.
