I am trying to find extension cords that should the power go out, the extension cord powers off. I have fish tanks that once the power goes off the filters needs to be filled back up with water before you turn them back on. If they are started without water there is a risk of fire. I am looking for extension cords that when a power outage occurs then the extension cord needs to be manually reset before any electricity goes through it again. Sorry if it sounds confusing but I am not really sure how to explain it.

I took a quick look at this on the net and cant find anything for at home, however what your basically getting into is whats called low voltage protection. I am an electrician and I have wired many things in industrial settings for this type of protection. Basically it involves the use of a start and stop button with a relay that maintains the power once started. In the case the power went off the relay drops out and prevents automatic restart. The idea basically is that say your were working on a bandsaw, the power goes out... and in the meantime to kill time you decide to change the blade but you never take the time to turn the switch to the off position... and half way through changing the blade the power comes on and well you get the idea... If your handy with electrical you could make something up at home, or try finding some breakers for the panel that may be able to do what you want. Keep looking and asking around im sure someone makes a plug in, inline version for the home, but i just havent seen one yet.

i am not sure about extension cords but I have a couple high end power bars with this feature. Once the power is shut off the switch resets and you must push a button and flip the switch at the same time. I'm pretty sure I bought them from The Source (when it was still Radio Shak however).

Cheers

Thank you both.

Do you know the brand name on that power cord? I have found a few GFCI but so far they all seem to be triggered only by a power serge

Wouldn't an aquarium store be able to help you?

Not so far. They just look at me like I head two heads.

After the comments posted I did some more reading on electricity panels. Based on what little I understand, I think the power bar needs to have a breaker switch in it the same as a control panel. It may be just easier to get an electrian to change the panel to add a manual reset for when the power goes out.

Keep in mind, just because I want the kill switch on a power bar doesn't mean anyone actually makes one lol
