Hey everyone,
Today I was at a local flea market and found. a NIB Gerber Bear Grylls edition Ultimate knife for $30. It came with a fire starter, sheath and sharpening stone.
Does anyone have one or know what they are like for quality?

Gerber is a good mass market Knife Retailer, some people love this Bear Grylls guy, and some say the knife is very good.

Thanks. I've read some reviews about a few faults but it seems fairly sturdy.
Basically I just need to decide if its worth using or whether to just toss it in my spare BOB.
Cheers

Regarding that particular knife, I have heard a few negatives along with a few positives and while I do not own that one I am sure it can still be quite useful.
I do not believe that one knife can do it all, as I am a big believer in the right tool for the job. With that in mind I have put together a few knives that range from skinning to fighting usage.
In a pinch any knife will do and the Bear Grylis one may indeed be a good all around knife, especially with the fire starter.
Let us know how it works out for you.

Agreed! Survival knives are like kitchen knives... some can be all around decent but, would you slice a turkey with a little veggie knife? No.

I have this knife(saw) in my BOB... BOB and this little kit big game set
This one in my purse... lil one mine is actually a bit smaller than this one.
one of each in my car... multi-use & folding knife
and 2 of these in my house... Just in case

I am not paranoid, I just live in a crappy area and if someone is breaking in I have the advantage with a knife. I have used the ones in my purse and car numerous times... always glad I have had them with me.

I think part of the question for the knife is how is feels in your hand, both the balance and the grip. I have owned a few good knives but found they did not sit well in my hand.

Don't forget that often at flea markets you end up with a "knock off".

Whatever feels comfortable in your hand but I've found that a carbon steel blade is nicer than stainless steel. I like chunky wood handles for straight knives(try a Lee Valley peasant knife) but I have big hands, folders are whatever fits your need. Don't discount utility knives(box cutters) with replaceable blades, always scary sharp, never sharpen, just replace blade. Folders or retractable blade and cheap.
Price is not always an indication of blade quality, more of snob factor, some of my best were under $30.

I lucked into a really cute folding pocket knife at Winners (of all places), 3" blade, Coast brand ("quality since 1919"), with a webbed holder for on a belt. Not bad quality at far as this "not an expert" can tell. Guess the price!

$5.00 !! 😀

Anyone feel handy?
I stumbled on this website. Scroll all the way down to the bottom where he's making his own knives out of recip saw blades. Hang on to those old blades.
Doesn't ship to Canada(yet) but there's some cool stuff there. Guy seems like the real deal.

What area of Winners did you find it? In the guys stuff?

ratdogmom:
yes, it was over by the guys' stuff, last fall, there was a lot of camping stuff at that time. I still think about a crank lantern I saw there but didn't buy as it was just a little too much. ('cause I'm cheap.)

Here is a picture of it from the Coast website:

I keep it in my BOB along with a very nice red handled multi-tool that I got at The Source, for $5. (on clearance)

Thanks for the link. What a get idea. I make my own scraper blades for furniture refinishing so I think I may try this. I have someone that plastic coats the handles for me.

Stay away from stainless steel knives, their only value is that they're rust resistant. As a knife, they wont hold an edge. A high carbon blade if taken care of will take care of your needs. I have one that I could use to shave with if I put the proper angle to it. Get the proper sharpening stones. Go online to see the angles required for the type of job your planning to use them on. The same for axes also, I have a broken grinding wheel that I use for rough dressing the few nicks that I get now and then.

I have a rough use knife in every vehicle, quad, or pack. They are for cutting down trees and work that you do not with to damage a good skinning knife. Small folding knives are handy to keep in small bags and pockets, but are tiring when using on large jobs such as skinning and field dressing a moose. At teh end of the day, any sharp knife is better than none at all.
