Local grocery stores and Costco are looking back to normal ish. Still no Lysol/Clorox wipes anywhere and the hand sanitizers all have weird names (GiGi’s anyone? What came of Purell??) but somewhat back to normal anyway, with seemingly a certain level of inflation. I would never have made it at The Price is Right, but it seems like goods are more expensive generally.

Strange on what people are noticing. My wife and I find many goods Are not available, be it online or in the stores. There are substitutes but even those can be few and far between on the shelf or at Amazon.

As far as I am co corned, I am not letting up in preps and am trying to gently prod on some family and friends to beef thing’s up.

Well here’s a little article on shortages.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/coronavirus-surge-challenges-struggling-food-supply-chains-11594546200

So if more people become hospitalized or stay at home for quarantine, it only stands to reason, shortages will increase.
Just a guess, but if supply chain in the US is getting hit, could one expect to see the very natural reaction of the home front first, limit exports to Canada and conversely Canadians selling product to the US for higher price?

I think we may have 5 weeks before we see mad rush at stores again

Not so much a shortage, but chicken feed has gone up $3/ bag here. That’s roughly 20-25%.

Time to go look for a farmer interested in selling me some grains.

Well, freezers seem to be in short supply, stand up or chest seem to be an issue for us, calling around and nothing that works or they don’t know when they will have in. Guessing between a few people stocking up and manufacturing... freezers May be the old TP 😆

Bread machines are another we have noticed in short supply and I am guessing so will most things that are related to home based food production.

Posting in local grocery store said "due to aluminum can shortage producers have cut back on flavours available."

Likely manufacturing and import. I had a hard time replacing a dehumidifier a couple of weeks ago, certainly not because people are prepping for more humidity... Likely a mix of less Asian production, combined with fewer shipments and likely re-prioritization of shipments.

Just in time delivery works perfectly, so long as it works perfectly... One little hiccup somewhere in the chain and everything craps out.

A colleague has been trying to replace his freezer and certainly struggles to find something.

Very likely a case of both, one being simple supply and the other being increased demand on a strained supply system. Yet, the funniest and almost unbelievable occurrence happened when I got really tired of the 33-36 degree heat and went to China tire to get a few fans, I figured After a few weeks of heat they would be sold out but instead They had tons of the things at all different price points. Couldn’t believe it.

Regardless, we have a little shopping list of those famous 3 is 2, 2 is 1, items and will be procuring before end of August. For me, that’s the cut off date, cases are rising again here in ottawa and by third week in September I expect shelves to be if not bare of essentials to be close to it. I just want my freezers so I have space to freeze my garden harvests. Have mason jars if need be but prefer to freeze if I can, plus I have room for a deer, which again, I could can ( will need more cans if I go that route 🙁 )

I don’t have a good feeling for this fall, winter, spring and next summer. Sure hope I am wrong because I can see it getting extremely ugly. Speculation and preparedness go hand in hand and as we all know, many things can changes, but if I look at current course both here and abroad, combine with ALl the seemingly obvious details, impacts..., That are not being discussed because they are disheartening or embarrassing, I can’t help but say we are in for some even more serious pain in the next year and the aftermath or path of destruction that will be before us in the fall of 2021 will be even longer and worse then most can imagine.

I was just in a couple stores and for giggles I checked on freezers and sure enough one store only had two in stock, and another none. Interesting.

On a good note, Home Hardware had 4.5 inch Dewalt zip disks on sale for a dollar each. You can never have enough of those!

As a few may know, I love examining what is not being said in the media, business or in the world of politics. Now any half decent journalist would be seeing or hearing of these things and yet zip nada nothing in the news. All we tend to hear about is completely unimportant things like whether sports will reopen or can we go to a bar or restaurant.

Don’t get me wrong, these businesses employ people and it sucks to be them, but and this is the clue, they continually focus on these two industries and mention almost nothing on all the other far more critical questions of the day.

Anyone hear from a reliable source what the situation is for critical medicines/ what is the exact supply? What are the Consumer and government debts, what is the exact amount of PPE’s we have right now in canada? Don’t tell us an order has been placed, spell out what’s in a government warehouse and stop with the airy fairy open legal speak. how many home owners are behind in mortgage payments in canada, while free money sounds nice, how exactly will our governments pay this off? by “ investing” more borrowed money in giveaways? raising taxes on middle income ( those evil rich people) ? And so on and so on.

Now the above isn’t political at all or a rant, it’s all about shortages, both now and in the future. As systems crumble from sickness levels or debt, it will impact us in many ways and it’s those odd little ways like trying to get a freezer to store our harvests, a simple garden hose, seeds, medicines, parts to operate the local water filtration, hydro, natural gas distribution stations etc etc etc. That will impact all of us. Thus the need to look hard in the coming days and weeks at what we need and get out there and snag them now.

I was talking with a longtime friend the other week and he is well connected in the community and could pickup the phone and say I need this or that. I was telling him he needs to think about stocking up and that while today he could get a freezer load of prime beef.... dropped off at his house, he won’t be able to do that if emergency measures act is triggered. I told him those stores or warehouses would be under government control and while there always has and will be corruption and means to obtain things, it will be a damned sight harder. I told him, even if he could get a truck to show up, the neighbors would notice and the gig would be up.

No, no one is talking at all about shortages these days, it’s all about seating limits at a blasted bar or some overpaid jock chasing a piece of plastic on the ice that is worrying people these days. Bless their hearts for I don’t think they will be to worried about watching a hockey game on a bars big screen come this November. Well actually, many of will be but I think there will be fewer. ( some may even have succumbed)

So those of us who do care about being ready, we should use this board and the shortage tagline to alert others to any and all important shortages. This not only for the obvious but to try and detect an even worse trend approaching and what it may mean to our well being, security and impact on critical infrastructure. Because a shortage of canned peas or garden hose...likely means a potential shortage of mechanical parts for hydro stations, water filtration, fuel pumping, car or tractor parts, computer network gear.....it’s all important to how we live these days and even if we don’t need these things, others do! And that can affect us in more ways than is initially obvious.

So to all those who read this and other posts, don’t be shy and tell everyone what you are witnessing when shopping or have heard from others.

Got a call from relatives in "The City" saying that they can't find any Lysol Wipes or Toilet paper in the stores and wanted to know if I could get them any.

I'm in what I would call a small town (although its considered a city) and Toilet paper is readily available on store shelves, Lysol Wipes are still hard to find but I'm sending a supply of both to them.

So although the store shelves seem pretty full around here, clearly other places are still suffering shortages of some basics (Toilet Paper)

We ordered a freezer in I believe in April and it’s supposed to come next week, ordered another one in first week in June from another company in ottawa, promised for July 20. No call, left message, no call. Call again and get round around, call again and surprise, “maybe November “ 😆 😆 😆 😆 getting a different unit/ no audible alarm feature.

What a farce. What ticking me off more is the excuse of covid. Of course it’s covid but in theory, a persons brain still functions, but I find more and more peopLe are like some zombie just mouthing covid when they are just lazy or looking for an excuse to not work or laud their power over you.

Good news is, we were able to order in three months of meds on our dime. Insurance is only paying one month at a time, cheap ......

So the first freezer ordered was from Home Depot. Guess what, supposed to ARRIVE today, get phone call from them today, sorry it’s not in, we expect to get it the end of August. What a bunch of twits. Didn’t know last Thursday the stupid thing wasn’t in, gotta wait till delivery day to know you can’t deliver. So both freezer delivery dates pooched by months, had to accept alternate On second order and will see if that comes in this Wednesday. Sucking eggs on Home Depot unit and hope it does get here for first week of September.

Will never ever order from Home Depot again, they pooched the simple delivery of hoses and plants. The plants took over a month to get here and were half dead.
When hoses came we returned them as we had already gotten others from China tire.

I called around for freezers so I could tell HD to shove it but nothing available in larger units, zip nada nothing.so stuck with them for this time but they will not see my money again. Spoke to salesmen from an appliance store and he said the US plants are struggling to get parts from Mexico.

So my advice, you need something important , get it now and try not to order it in. I regret not having shopped until I found one in stock a few months ago, I thought I was doing the right thing by avoiding picking it up. What a snit show we are in and this isn’t even the second inning

So are ice cream machines lol.. but no really I know at least a dozen peaple that are three months or more waiting for their freezers to come in.. they are massively back ordered.. I feel for anyone that needs one if their old fails because there will be no.. go get a new one to move stuff over into it..

I hope everyone who has a freezer full of meat, has the canning equipment that if needed to make it shelf stable if required.
