I finally finished itemizing my 'pantry list' and figured I'd share it with everyone here in the thoughts of food storage. Technically, this isn't survival storage, but the minimums and basics I want on hand at all times, whether the lights or on and the grocery store is stocked, or if the zombies are trying to navigate double deadbolted doors.

While it's not technically survival based, as this is intended to be suplemented with regular additions of fresh veggies, salads, meat and fruit, I could live comfortably and healthily on this for quite a while. That may be my next project, now that I've got items and amounts sorted, is determining exactly how many days this will last me, and how much water and fuel I have to store to cook it. Look at some substitutions for the back of the closet to replace the fresh milk with dry for example. For now, here's my take on a properly stocked pantry;

Hey Aphrael, great topic. After my mass build up of preps and food after the Japan earthquake I started an inventory, also. (Too bad that 'tables' won't hold a format to this post.) This is all recent stuff, my two upper cupboards have some misc. and random instant/quick soup mixes, spices, instant oatmeal packets, etc. that I haven't yet inventoried. I have reached my 'comfort zone' so have eased off my purchases. My son moved out recently, it's just me and my daughter, and the cat. Fresh food consists mainly of milk, bread, apples, yogurt, cheddar, mixed salad, carrots and broccoli. Oh, and meat, but not a lot and not for every day. We're not vegetarians, it's just an expense and preparation issue. (I'm cheap and I'm lazy.)

DRY GOODS
ABC soup mix – split pea -- 7 lb.
Barley -- 12 lb.
Beans – mixed -- 12 lb.
Beans – pinto -- 7 ½ lb.
Broccoli Cole Shaw – home dried -- 1 lb.

Cornmeal -- 10 lb.
Flour - wheat -- 22 lb.
Flour – soy -- 2 lb.
Millet -- 5 ½ lb.
Oatmeal -- 9 ½ lb.
Pasta – macaroni -- 8 lb.
Pasta – spaghetti -- 6 lb.
Quinoa -- 7 ½ lb.
Rice – brown -- 3 – 900 gram boxes (approx. 6 lbs.)
Rice – white -- 26 ½ lb.

Texturized Vegetable Protein – TVP -- 3 ½ lb.
Veggie flakes – store bought -- 9 ½ lb.

MISC. DRY GOODS
Baking powder -- 2 lb.
Cinnamon - ground -- 1 lb.
Coffee -- 3 lb.
Gatorade - powder -- 3 – 560 gram containers (makes 24 litres)
Ginger - ground -- 1/2 lb.
Kraft dinner -- 16 boxes
Mr. Noodles soup mixes -- 48 packets
Muffin mixes – assorted -- 10 packets
Pancake mix – just add water -- 4 – 1 kilo boxes (approx. 9 lbs.)
Parsley – dried -- 1 lb.
Pepper - ground -- ½ lb.
Tea – orange pekoe (not decaf) -- 216 bags

WET & CANNED GOODS
Beans – 6 bean medley -- 6 cans
Beans – baked -- 8 cans
Beans – garbanzo -- 4 cans
Fruit Salad -- 12 cans
Honey – hard -- 4 ½ lb.
Honey – liquid -- 6 ½ lb.
Milk – canned -- 18 cans – 370 ml
Nutella – cocoa & hazelnut spread -- 3 – 750 ml jars
Oil – Safflo -- 3 – 1 litre bottles
Pancake syrup -- 4 – 750 ml jugs
Peanut butter -- 3 – 1 kg containers
Ham -- 6 cans
Salmon -- 4 cans
Soup – mushroom -- 6 cans

Tuna -- 12 cans

I have a lot of sugar because my dad gave me most of it after my mom went into complex care. It's good for wine making. 😀

hehe, 25lbs of sugar didn'r raise an eyebrow, but 1lb of dried parsley did. That is ALOT of dried green stuff. Do you need a full litre jar for it, or can you cram it down into a pint?

I buy my parsley at the health food store - 1lb for about $11 - organic and much cheaper 🙂

Good lists! I have most all of the above food stored as well - very good basic stuff. I'm working on being able to produce some of the other items myself - eggs, meat and vegetables.

Re: Dehydrated Parsley Flakes
I started out buying at the Dollar Store, but the Warehouse Store has a 1/2 lb. container for $1.99 !! (hey, paintergirl: you know what you're getting for christmas!) lol.

This new topic has really inspired me to revisit my food inventory because I realized that I'd missed listing some things that I knew I had, so I've updated my file and
printed off a new copy.
These are the things I missed:
Basil leaves (ground) -- 1/2 lb. (Warehouse Store)
Coffee (beans) -- 1 lb.
Coffee whitener -- 3+1/2 lb.
Engevita nutritional yeast -- 1+1/2 lb.
Fennel seed -- 2 lb. (another great buy at the Warehouse Store)
Soup flavouring -- Oxo bouillon -- 78 packets
Soup flavouring -- Knorr bouillon -- 24 cubes
Margarine -- 9 lb.
Jam -- assorted flavours -- 5 jars (500 ml)
Spaghetti sauce -- 8 cans

Your Panty Inventories are Impressive 🙂

My own Long Term Food Storage has taken more of a Freeze Dried direction. Its still fairly minimal but its a slow work in progress 🙂

I am still unpacking after moving so I am having to start fresh with my pantry again but have thrived off the pantry principle for years. But I shop heavy on the baking needs and dried goods ( rice, beans, peas, lentils, barley, dehydrated veg for soups and stews etc) seasonings and cases of tin goods.

My grandparents and dad lived in remote locales for years before I came along so my grandmother mentored me on pantry basics long before I was even on my own. The pantry has gotten my family through some tough times over the years but my best story is new Years 2001. Friends broke down about 20 kms away on the Trans Canada when they were heading back to Winnipeg on New Years Day. By noon my family and I found ourselves with 3 adults and 4 kids to feed for several days while their van was being repaired ~ after what had been some difficult cash-lean months for us that year. The pantry and deep freeze to the rescue! We had a rocking New Years dinner thanks to a well stocked deep freeze and pantry and everyone ate well for the duration of their stay with no further financial hardship on us.

Even now with my household reduced to 2 adults, I am already starting to create my usual pantry... life throws enough curve balls, it is nice to not have to worry about creating meals.

My only concern, I left behind my deep freeze when I sold my house ... I will be scouting for a small chest freezer to fit my new apartment.
