Albertaborn,
Thanks for the map. In the winter they will not be able to sneak into town without being seen. Of course, this would not be the refuge of the weak at heart.
Too bad, this map does not show the locations of the gas stations.....or, maybe it does and there are none this far North!!
Mountainman.
Sorry Mountainman
That was the only map I could find of the winter and Ice roads and it is what I based the directions I wrote earlier on in this thread.
You would just have start with google zoomed in and follow the road from La Ronge or a detailed Topo from the Queens printer.
The map was a PDF and I couldn't share it here.

I found it interesting from Crashed's link that there are several ghost towns nearby... google cam doesn't go to the ones I tried to look at unfortunately, so no idea if there is any infrastructure or not.
I read this thread and thought I would comment. I have been to Uranium City a couple of times by float plane. I routinely spend time in the north, several months each year, and have seen a number of remote mining communities like this where the mine closed and left 'ghost towns'. Always thought about moving to one myself, but because of what I have seen and people I have met that live in these places, I have always changed my mind.
First thing is that while the houses and lots are cheap, living there isn't. By that I mean that getting supplies and building materials is beyond expensive. The drive in and out of these northern areas is expensive to begin with...... long ways from nowhere and fuel up there is of course more expensive. Now if your supplies and such that you buy are going to purchased in northern areas like........... say La Ronge in this instance, it is expensive as hell in La Ronge. If you go way down to Regina it is cheaper to get things but the drive in the middle of the winter is a LONG one.
The talk about building green houses, etc etc is great but getting the materials there and doing it, along with solar and what not is going to be a huge investment. So do not fall into the trap of thinking that it will cost nothing for the house in the noted town and this will leave room to build all this other stuff.......... well it is going to be EXPENSIVE.
Once the winter road is out you are down to charter flights and if you are looking at a few grand to as much as six or seven thousand per flight (depending on the charter plane)......... well lets just say that things get expensive really quick when you run short.
The other issue that no one wants to talk about but which is absolutely a deal breaker for me, is the fact that the natives will break into your home within a day of you leaving one of these places unless your neighbour is riding shotgun. No I am not kidding. It is politically incorrect to talk about it but it is a real issue in the north. So think about it as you will have to learn to deal with it.
Winters up in that area are long.... ice out can be late June some years and it begins to cause problems for floats or can be by early October. Short growing season my friends.
Now in case you think I am really negative......... I am not. I love the north and in fact I manage a fishing lodge about the same latitude as Uranium City in northern Canada. It is great up there............ you just need to have a realistic view of things and you cannot approach this with rose colored glasses.

I was going to bring up the native thing too Mooswa but thought it may cause problems/a fight. Sometimes hard truth is better than hard words for those that have "rose colored glasses. My brother in law goes to a friends cabin where they must portage to get to, and he tells me they take everything out of the truck including the battery because the local natives will steal whatever is in there. They rent a truck because they do not want their in truck dvd player to get ripped out and stolen (it happened). I thought this would be looked at as racist by some but you and I are right in telling FACTS. I am just glad you said something first.
😆 Well sure, you wanted me to be the guinea pig.......... but I know exactly why you were reluctant to say anything. My wife however, says I am big and insensitive.
Anyways, if people want to get all bent and twisted when you are simply telling the truth......... to hell with them. I have many friends that are First Nations and I have worked with them and among them for many years. It simply is what it is. One needs to go into these sort of adventures with eyes wide open or be doomed to failure before you even get started. I have seen it many times.
Even here where I live........... very rural farm country and about 10 miles from the nearest small town of about 300 people.......... I see urban people move in and buy an old farm, going back to the land. One or two years of -30+ winters, deep snow drifts, cutting many cords of firewood, dealing with bears in the yard, wolves killing their livestock, deer eating the garden and having to try and learn how to fix everything because getting a trades person is not only difficult but hugely expensive due to travel time.......... and it is back to the bright lights and pavement.
I am all for people going on adventures and moving to the rural areas and becoming self-sufficient. My wife and I have been doing it most of our lives. It is a wonderful way to live and much less stress. You just need to approach armed with as much knowledge as you can acquire, a positive attitude and the drive to get through the first few years of hard work and steep learning curve.

To me this selection of location is probably one of the toughest to get to points that could be chosen, but I did look at it as possible even if not probable, I will share what I find as I have and let people decide based on that. My #1 problem is with getting to this location period. If the world goes sideways, I want to be able to go directly to my BOL if I don't already live there, this location doesn't support that, the mines and tailing ponds that have been left to contaminate the area bother me personally but if people want to try to use that location I will mentally support/applaud their efforts even if I will never go there.
From the choice of isolation ... well this place has it in spades, but there are still people living there so ... not impossible. Also there may be Native issues, but some of the non natives will be just as likely to steal from you, people always say natives do it but hell when 98% of the local population is native or metis then odds are the indians did it, but almost 100% that a local did it.
I tag everything big on my bush property, yes I mean tag as spray paint my name all over it, funny people are less likely to steal something that has someone's name in big RED letters, I engrave and mark stuff blatantly, and just leave it all in plain site, after 2 years I have lost little or nothing, even though there have been a few trespassers passing through (so far so good) the fact that I occasionally blaze away with a semi auto on my target range and I pop up where local people can see me on my property edges dressed in a ghille tends to make rumors fly, most notice my scoped rifle (for bears) but not my camera which is my real reason for stealth but an urban legend works well as a deterrent. I also never advertise my coming and going I am just there and then I am not this unpredictability also tends to bother the local thieves, most people around my land do not even know that I also own a home just down the road, ( because I am not a social butterfly) so popping in is quick and easy therefore more rumors.
I will say yes I am lucky but I help my luck as much as I can.

Thank you Folks,
Now this topic is beginning to work for the betterment of all. The shields are down and the information and truths are beginning to flow. This is the raw details that we need to make any BOL project work. Just posting "It will not work" or "It will never work" or "That location sucks", are not really in the category of constructive criticisms. But the details in the last half dozen posts, that is detail that make the point. Uranium City wins points for remote, but the logistics for moving people, vehicles, food, building supplies, resources and/or skilled labour to or from the town would be a nightmare. The high probability your property will be raided by other locals in your absence, brings a new challenge to the forefront.
I presented the idea of Uranium City as a possibility as a prepper town, primarily because the town is there and the people are not. There has been a lot of chatter on this Forum about people wanting to develop a sustainable community. If the community already exists and all you need to add are a group of like-minded persons, that may be a lot easier than trying to rise the whole thing from scratch.
The idea was presented to look for other ghost towns and see if there is a possible match. A great idea. The village of Mountain Park, AB looks like it would have been the right choice for those of us in Alberta, however, we are at least 40 years too late. The pics show only a cemetery now. But they have coal, on the surface.
I hope more great ideas make their way to these pages.
Thanks for all the valuable information, ideas and intel so far!!
Cheers,
Mountainman.
The black lines in the first photo are the borders to the major cities and surrounding areas that are heavily populated and might garnish the most response from in the forum.
Gravlore okay I see the maps but I am lost as to the why or what we are focusing on through them. Can ya give us some more details?

It is a central point to some major cities. It is simply a focal point of travel from those areas. If perhaps a parcel was made in the red area the interest may be higher. There are bodies of water and some heavily treed areas there so prices may be cheaper if thats the case. I haven't searched to find out if it is crown land or not.
Manito Lake is listed as salt water .... No fish in it .... 3 1/2 times saltier than the Dead sea ... so I would look careful at most water bodies in that area. But it is good to know a place to go to ... too make salt for supplies in an after world scenario
There are some land listings as far as I can see in both the AB SK parts of that Box, I will not say they are over priced and there are a few that seem reasonable # of acres to price ratio.
from my point of view I would suggest that looking more to the northern part will get you a better a better location for your money, also a better chance of having some trees and natural water.
Also there are quite a few parks and wetland sanctuaries scattered across the northern part of that box
