Brought home 19 more egg layer chickens today so we can keep up with customer demand and actually have a few to eat ourselves. Having a Mr. Sheep delivered on Saturday so we can have babies - yeah 🙂
Quieter week, for a change 😉 , bought few more groceries for the supply shelves and updated the food expiry date list. Hunted around for a three legged dutch oven and made a few buddy burners as an experiment. Stocked up on more lump charcoal for the kamodo cooker. Find of the week was DW lucking into a sheepskin coat, perfect condition, at a second hand shop for $15. One of us will be nice and warm if the furnace goes out 😆 Thought she got it for me, but it fits at least three family members so I may be out of luck 🙄
Hey Billy,
what is a Buddy Burner?
Thanks
I'm not Billy, but a Buddy Burner is a clean empty tuna can filled with a coiled strip of cardboard with some wax poured in--you can put a wick in the middle or leave some cardboard above the wax. Light it, and it's kinda like a sterno can--it's usually used by Scouts and Guides for cooking on a Tin Can Stove.
A Tin Can Stove is a #10 can turned upside down, use a bottle opener/can opener (the kind that opens beer bottles and punches triangular holes into cans of liquids) to punch some holes around the side of the can near what is now the top (the sealed part) and then cut a 3" x 3" door in the side at the bottom and fold it up.
The Tin Can Stove can be heated with either a Buddy Burner or a small fire of twigs.
Thank you my Lady Fogirl;
so it is similar to a hobbo cook can or a rocket cooker. This is a variation on both of them,, hummmm.
I just saw a post somewhere else where they put a roll or two of toilet paper in a new clean paint can, poured in Alcohol, let it sit for a few minutes then used it for cooking. To extinguish, just cover with a lid.
Thanks again for the info
hi,
Thanks for answering for girl. Got the idea from an old copy of Roughing it Easy http://www.amazon.com/Roughing-Easy-Ideabook-Camping-Cooking/dp/0962125733 that my wife picked up years ago.
Not a lot on sale this week that we would use - Canadian Tire has batteries on sale and $50 off a solar panel so am going to take a look at that. Anyone heard if the power is back on for those folks down in the states that got hit with the snowstorm?
I was at Princess auto last night and they have a whole box set solar setup.
4 x 15wat pannels
stand
regulator
inverter
something else?
cables for setup
all for only $499 - I did a quick look and the panels alone were $150 each.
make sure you pop into Princess auto if you can, they have a huge selection of 12v stuff as well as solar right now, the largest collection I have seen.
Our local Bulk Barn finally opened last week so we picked up some spices, flours, etc...they have a great price on sugar, cheaper than any sale I've ever seen. Even my wife said it was a good deal, so it must be so!
I noticed they sell unflavored TVP. I think I'll stop by and pick some up and try some recipes for my BOB with it.
Things are slower this week, more reading/learning, note-taking on skills/alternatives then anything though we did get some canned pink salmon for 1.49 each ( expiry is 2016!..very surprised to see that as I had not seen such an expiry date like that before) and instant coffee at a hot price (...Necessary for me 😉 ). Another 12 litres of water stored and a wool army blanket in pristine (possibly new) condition for $5 and a large bag of 8 tensor bandages/gripper clips at the thrift store for $2.

WOW!! Seriously great price on this!!
40 more litres of drinking water stored.
Outside of house is prepped for winter. All shovels, salt/sand are at front of shed. All deadwood, loose branches and other potential wind blow hazards have been removed and recycled. Some unexpected anaerobic compost (man, that stuff stunk!) was dumped into a ground pit for wintering over and for use next year.
Reviewed family budget for the past month and saw gas for cars was about a third higher than budgeted for. Did some financial pruning so we balance out again next month.
10 lbs of rice purchased.
Wow, everyone's really preparing furiously for winter!
Not me so much as I live in a condo. But I have been pondering it, thinking about how many blankets, quilts, warm clothes, footwear, etc. we have. The other day, at the Sally Ann, I bought a catalytic tent heater. Real oldie, uses 'white fuel', which my dad says is naphtha. He checked it out for me (I couldn't get the top to open. I'm not usually ditzy) 🙄 We are going to spend an hour practicing lighting it later this week. I've also been looking on YouTube how to operate one.
A few days ago I found a cute little light-weight portable barbecue at Value Village for $5. It is the type that uses charcoal briquettes. (not sure I'll actually get any use out of it as I have an enclosed balcony, and I'm too lazy to take it to a park. Hey paintergirl, want a teeny tiny barbeque? 🙂 It's adorable!
Safeway has Ocean Spray Grapefruit Cocktail on $5.99 for the gallon(ish) size jug (3.78 litres). I really like the jugs for storing water, great handle.
With everyone talking about canning I've been reading up on it, my dad even gave me a book about Preserves, from my mom's stuff. What I thought was interesting and needs looking into is that many of the recipes end with (after pouring into sterilized jars) "cover with 2 layers of waxed paper, then one layer of aluminum foil. Tie securely with string." Anyone ever heard of that before?
Be careful with that heater...last week during the east coast snow storm, 2 people died from a propane heater running in a mobile home. Make sure you vent the room and get yourself a CO detector. The one that killed those two people was also rated for indoor use...which means it will not produce significant amounts of CO, but will still consume the oxygen in the room.
As for the wax paper & foil, sounds like a really old book...try downloading one from my blog here... http://denobpprn.blogspot.com/p/downloads.html

OK - my heart is racing 🙂 PLEASE don't use old canning books! Using wax, tinfoil etc. is really old school and NOT safe at all. Please buy a current book like The Bernardin Book or the Ball Blue book - anything with a current copyright date and follow the instructions CAREFUULY. It's not hard to do but but ya got read the instructions!

Absolutely! Hold it and I will buy it from you! 😀
