I finally found a source of 5gal food grade buckets. The problem has been that here in Quebec, vegetable oil is now sold to restaurants the same way as bulk wine. That is in a mylar type bag and in a box. But there is one VERY popular item still sold to restaurants in 5 gal. HDPE pales.....
POUTINE SAUCE MIX
Found 2 places yesterday where these are tossed out back with the lids. So all Quebecers, start searching out the poutine places!
Picked up two bows this week, both used but in good condition.
One Recurve Bow
One Compound Bow
spent too much time here, so this coming week, working on making another few stoves and changing up some equipment, checking BOB tomorrow, weather permitting.
Got a 3lb package of prepped pineapple spears from Costco...dehydrated them after slicing them to 1/4 inch thickness....OMG they are delicious! I have to go buy more because I keep stealing small pieces from the jar 😀
I'm the lady you're stuck behind in the grocery store with the over loaded cart filled with cases of tuna, peanut butter, huge bags of rice and the weary looking husband
This week was all about greenhouse, cold house in regards to working with plants and some prep work in the main garden, some building of vertical garden climbers, still working on the next hugelculture raised bed as we are cleaning out the deep packs from the big and little barns, turned composts piles, pruning of blackberries, rasberries, currents, gooseberries and blueberry bushes, as well as touch up trimming on my elderberry bushes (did the big trim on them in the fall).
In the kitchen its been a playing week on making fun dishes, I have been working with tripe, bone marrow, quail, blood dishes, how to make homemade gelatin out of cocks combs, corned out whole legs of lamb, and now they are slow and cold smoking away.. Otherwise, working on a lambs hide, its coming along nicely..
Otherwise, the other fun thing this week has been following my family line back to the 11th century.. very cool..

The only problem with coming here is;
I get hungry! Reading all the food related things, makes me hungry hehe..

Oooh... these sound yummy! I must try that this week!
Purchased a almost new 2 man tent ($5) and a large tarp ( $1.50) and a book on homemade energy ( 75 cents) at the thrift store today. Have been dehydrating veggies, have 5 more gallons of water.
Fresh inventory and new "must get" list.
Did a dehydrator full of sliced lemons...the "flesh" darkened a lot, not as pretty as the orange but oh well, the flavour is superb so I don't care 😉

I did some orange slices a while back on the dehydrator, and although they have some flavor, there is not a lot of substance to them. More presentation than anything else, maybe I did them wrong?

You probably did them right. They should be fine for flavouring teas and baking...I test drove my dehydrated oranges in cornmeal/dried cherry muffins and the flavour was exceptional.
Do realize that each batch of oranges at the store could come from different sources and the fresher the orange the better. Timing for when the new crops of oranges come available will provide optimum results. Always go for heavy, firm oranges that don't smell obviously "orange-y" as this means they've been kept warm/room temperature too long and are starting ferment...same goes for any other citrus fruit. If the fruit is soft but not smelling obviously fermented, taste test before drying to be sure they're not over ripe.

Prepping some Dairy Queen 2 US gallon fruit puree buckets and found that they have a rubber gasketed lids!!!!! So I have carefully pulled the gaskets and am disinfecting them and letting them air dry completely before reassembling the lids...the buckets I washed yesterday so they're ready to fill.

I'm fairly new at this. 😀
This week I bought boxes of matches and put them in pint jars with sandpaper on the top.
I bought more canning jars from Value Village. 6-$1.99.
I dehydrated celery and put it in jars.
And I found washing soda at the food coop so I could make dishwashing and laundry soap.
Hubby set up HD plastic shelving in the basement.

I am going to check that out tomorrow when I go into town! I've been paying $2.00 each for big buckets from our local bakery.
Hubby and I are thinking about a few chickens - maybe by next spring.
Food will get you through times with no money, but money will not get you through times with no food.
Just a reminder to everyone, to not put anything directly on concrete, to try to have a 2x4 at least spacing from the concrete.
Yesterday I lucked in at a thrift shop, bought a brand new, never used, oil lamp (with 2 spare wicks) for $8 😀
A few days ago I cleaned out the wood fireplace at work and brought home a bucket of ashes. 😕
😎 I think there is an experiment in my future.
I've been busy the last couple days, helping my daughter pack for her move to Seattle and wedding next month.
Congratulations on the upcoming wedding - you've got to be happy about that! I wish them well!
