im looking for advice im prepping a few months now and iv been looking at alot of videos on youtube about prepping and security but alot of them videos are based in the US where guns are redley avalable where as im in ireland where gun are few a fair between only special police and farmers have them so what im asking is that anyone got any ideas for self protection for me and my family and food,i have knives and machetes
Stick with the knife or move. if you buy a gun you have to feed it and ammo cant be that easy to get if you cant get a gun. So that means you cant hunt over there..... I would go crazy! Im praying for fall already so i can go hunting again!
:twisted:I`m not carzy everyone else is!
i was thinkin maybe a bow and arrow might be easy to get and would be great in a survival situation, yeah 2012compatible it stinks over there your not aloud hunt but doesnt stop people
never thought of that over there....i used to have a compound bow and a compound crossbow as a kid in the UK....crossbow may be an idea...

😀 I have been hunting and shooting for almost 60 years. have deer, moose, blackbear, cougar, goose and grouse along with a couple salmon in the freezer. 15 minute drove from home puts me in the bush. live close to the ocean and fresh water lakes. lots of easy survival food available. guess we will be the lucky ones. nootka nick. p.s. family came from IRELAND over 100 years ago. I've read about, and watched a few videos on a bow sling. They're compact, and according to videos they can pack a punch. I don't know if they're legal, but hey...
If anyone has used one I would like to learn more.

A few great weapons other than firearms to defend your home:
Cross Bow
Long Bow
Taser
Bear Traps
Air Cannons (use potatoes with razor blades or nails in them as ammo)
Javelins (spears)
Sling Shots (believe me they work)

ha, yeah. they don't sell too many bear traps in Ireland though (once went out with a honey trap in Belfast, but thats not the same)

My mother came from Belfast so I can claim some Irish ancestry but I was not aware that there were no bear traps or Irish bears to be had on the Emerald Isle.
My father saw an Irish bare once and I guess that was how I came to be.
(Sorry but I just had to, I couldn’t help myself.)
Seriously though, there are many weapons that are extremely effective other than the ones that shoot bullets and depending on where you intend to engage the enemy and how you wish to disable them there are great alternatives anywhere from electricity all the way to catapults.

WHATEVER weapons one chooses or has at hand, be sure you are able and willing to use them. practice, and practice some more. go camping and try to spend the day using one hand ( like one is broken or shoulder dislocated. ) use your good hand, right handed if you ARE righthanded. you will become VERY discouraged if you try to use your left hand doing this the first time. light a fire, open a can, bait a fishing line. Not easy, but can be done. try it for an hour, today, around the house. If you plan on killing anything to feed yourself/group, learn how to gut and cool what you kill. you may well have to eat things that you would not think of in good times. I hate liver but try a piece now and then. it does not have to taste good, its ment to keep you alive. BUG OUT TIME is not meant to be a fun time, sitting around a campfire, though it can be. its when all goes wrong and you get OUT OF DODGE while you can. Bad things can happen any time. Look at the fire at the hydro station out in the valley. Good to see some sight members were prepared. I keep things stashed at several of my BUG OUT locations, but i still have to get to them. have a plan c AND a plan d. incase plan a & b don,t work. plans should be constantly updated
hey bushcraft,
i think your out of luck. it would appear looking at current irish legislation you need a licence for both a longbow and a crossbow. the licence can be applied through your local garda station, and you complete the application in the presence of an officer, who then forwards it to the superintendent. you would have to join a local archery club...here's one... http://dublinarchers.com/wordpress/
but if your going through all that trouble why not just join a skeet club....a decent over under will cost about the same as a top of the range crossbow....more expensive to shoot given, but still not that expensive...shtf scenario, take a foot off the end of it... 2c

I'm in the same situation in Oz, I can't afford a weapon but I've been practising "stick fighting" for quite a while now - easy enough to learn and as you get faster at it I think you could defend yourself really well. There are plenty of web sites to get you started. If most people are in the same situation (with no powerful weapons) they will have to rely on their own wits and whatever they can lay their hands on to protect themselves in any "sticky" situations (no pun intended).

Some of the things we have thought about...
ammo only lasts so long
some things like
baseball bat
good knife
Claw hammer
Axe or hatchet
even a 3 foot piesce of steel pipe or rebar
slingshot and rocks can be easily made and rocks make good ammo
just my thoughts
