I'm with the show All In A Day at CBC Radio in Ottawa. We'd like to chat with some Ottawa-area preppers on our show on Friday. Yes, some people are saying that day will mark the end of the world, but regardless of what happens, we'd just like to learn a bit about prepper culture. Perhaps those people who aren't well prepared for emergencies could learn something! Interested? Please get in touch. I'm happy to provide more detail by phone or e-mail - 613-288-6497, Susan.Burgess@cbc.ca. Thanks for your time!
Hmmm...seems like the CBC is all over preppers lately!
Before agreeing to this I would like to remind everyone about Anna Maria Tremonti's comment about giant claw-fisted robots!
CBC radio does not have a good record with preppers in my opinion.
Here is a direct quote from a CBC website...
We've been talking today about Preppers. If society really does break down, it likely won't be very entertaining. But from War of the Worlds to The Walking Dead, many people sure seem to enjoy the fantasy of a world without rules.
Many video games take place in post-apocalyptic lands, but the Fallout series starts with the premise that even preparing for the end is slightly... ludicrous.
On today's Last Word, Here's the Fallout pitch -- rent your space in an underground cave now and outlast the bombs, the mutants and the giant claw-fisted robots.
mockery is on the menu
And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her;
for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones,...
and slaves, and souls of men.
The CBC does not have a good record at all with the truth or dealing with people they interview.
If anyone is crazy (insert other words here) to do this, make sure you agree to questions up front, direction of interview, pitch and tone of interview.
Make sure they do not try to turn you into Chicken Little, they like that a lot, or to augment their own version of the Doomsday Preppers TV show, most of whom have been misquoted, sound bitten and generally interviewed to look and appear crazy or the comments where re-organized for sensationalism.
From My Experience, they will promise everything up front, deliver very little and their follow up will be next to nothing or blatantly ignoring you after spending so much time with email and phone interviews to make you give them all the background info and knowledge they need.
GOOD LUCK
Susan to bad you are so far away from me or I would love to explain to you and your audience just what the IN word "prepping" is really all about.
It is the exact same thing our grandparents and theirs did. That was putting food back, filling the pantry, making their own clothing, to make sure they could live thru winters, sickness, a bad harvests or job lose, etc.
Back then, most likely others thought you were crazy if you didn't put food, clothing, water, firewood back, each year.
Nothing really much different except its coming to light more and more, that we need to go back to common sense by looking after ourselves.
Rather a rare concept is it not, Susan?
Using common sense in taking care of oneself and family?
Does that make me (and others) crazy or be mocked cause I/we would like to eat when snowed in and no one can come to help and the 3 days of food (that is suggested), is about to run out?
Or want to stay warm when its minus 40 out?
Or don't have the proper clothing to keep warm cause one can't get to the store IF its even open when and if they manage to clear the roads?
Storing water to have when the lines freeze up and you can't draw water for humans or animals?
Susan, I can assure you that a hungry, cold and thirsty, be it man or beast will not care what it is called, nor will they think it is news worthy.
They will however be very thankful that its available because someone had the common sense to put all their needs up for a later use.
Like many things thru the years names change.
Myself , I don't call it prepping, I call it good sense putting food back, to have in case its needed. I do use the word prepping because others relate to that word.
So perhaps Susan, you can go to your superior and suggest CBC do more shows on what life was like and how they managed way back then to survive thru harsh snow storms or come what may.
Then shows on how people today should be preparing for bad events in ones life. Use canning, dehydrating, etc. " how to's " on keeping food thru the year til next harvest.
How to get back to the land and have respect for the land.
Then more shows on how to make ones own clothing, etc..
Failing that and someone says but I don't grow or harvest.
A show on how people that live in a city can be just as prepared as the ones in the country.
Another show on how to reload ammo. another on gun care and RESPECT for said gun.
Course you could have a wood working show to show others how to build from wood.
One of those first projects could be making a cabinet that locks up said ammo and guns, safely!
Another on storage shelving/cabinets for food to put back.
Another show on how to protect those foods and clothing by proper storage.
The ideas are endless if its really to help, as you said, and I quote you:
"those people who aren't well prepared for emergencies could learn something."
But then again that would probably not really give good ratings...would it?
Sorry I keep forgetting its all about ratings in today's world.
Though I am betting CBC can get sponsors for these types of shows quite easy.
On my travels thru the net I see many business selling many things that would help those that wanted to help themselves.
I also see many people searching for info. on how to do things and the article they need to do for themselves.
So you see Susan, CBC does not need one or two people to go before the cameras/mic./calling/emailing CBC to tell the world.
They need to be guided along with correct information, which I feel, CBC could pull off, if they really wanted to help.
As I write this we are under a heavy snow warning....again.
I now see, with the amount thats on the ground right now, I will have to be plowed out before I can move out of my driveway.
Am I worried? Not one bit. Thats what comes from putting back all I need to get me and my critters thru, Even to be able to help someone, if its really needed. 🙂
Respectfully,
OldTimeGardener

VERY well said OldTimeGardener. I wonder if we will see a response from CBC here? They were quick enough to ask for input...lets see how quick they are to accept it.
Do the interview on the 24th if the date is irrelevant. CBC tool.
How about interviewing the Red Cross???

I can't believe they did that!
Doomsday?
Now who are the nutcases?
Dec 20th update for Susan and possible ideas for her to run by her producers.
We are still getting heavy snow and completely blocked in. The road way to get to the hwy, even if we could get out, is completely blocked in also.
We have had over a foot of snow just over night (on top of what was already here) and its continues to fall at great rates with blowing snow.
Keep in mind that was after another heavy snow fall we had gotten.
Some things are showing weight stress and about to collapse due to the heavy snows, had I not got out there fast to clear it of snow.
Welcome to winter!
So far this morning, I have already gotten a couple of phone calls.
When I asked how they were doing?
They say that they are about to run out of certain food stuffs. Milk and bread being some of the things.
Now these are people that know I bake my own bread and knit. BUT I had other things that need to be done this am, instead of baking/knitting for someone thats had well over a day warning it was heading in.
Regardless I said, well if you or one of the kids (teens) can come down to help clear snow off the top of roof for the chicken run and the sheds, I could have some time to bake a loaf of bread for them to tide them over.
No..?
Can't do it?
Why not?
I have the equipment here to do so.
Oh not enough warm clothing for this weather, I see. Well I am sorry but I need to get out and get this done.
End of convo. with me shaking my head.
My guess is seeing we still have hydro so they are to busy at their electronic games and such to lift a finger.
We need a touch more reality to set in yet, such as lights out. Then I might have someone at my door, maybe with shovel in hand.
I believe that's called motivation.
Ma Nature is very good at that sort of thing. 😉
Here you have an example of those that are willing to take even tho they are not willing to lend a hand, even tho it would have helped them!
Not prepared for what our winters are like here. Someone else will give them a hand or it will not be as bad as said....and on and on goes the excuses.
They didn't learn anything from the last snow storm..they will not learn now.
These are the ones that need to learn, if its only by the hard way. It may make them sit up and take notice that they NEED to do this themselves before something happens, by doing without a few times.
Remember, I did say may...no that it would.
I will not enable them to lean on me.
I practice tough love here. Look it up Susan and you will find the jest of it.
Don't get me wrong Susan.
Had they tried or if they were really in danger I might have found a solution for them, at least for a while. They did have some wood to keep warm with, tho not a whole winters worth.
They have electric heaters for backup???? They best be hopin' and prayin' that the hydro doesn't go out!
So much for the recommended 72 hrs or the 3 day supply of needed things to have at hand.
This is only a wee tiny speck on the map of people that think 'others' will help.
Think about this Susan, how much CBC could be helping those out there, without really lifting a hand to do so. Just by constantly informing people this is what you NEED to do to help yourself. Pick up extra can food here and there as they go, even of on a low income one can do it. Open that tap and pour water into those 2 L pop bottle stash them away. Go to a 2nd hand store where you can buy almost new clothing for next to nothing.
If I had your job Susan, with the great opportunity to help so many. You bet I would run it past the producers to see the need out there, the great work they can do.
Word gets out fast if something good or bad happens. Why not word getting out that CBC has information, GOOD information on how we can help ourselves in a bad situation.
You/CBC just need to get them started and they themselves will start to see that putting foods back (prepping) will give them great peace of mind. Not to mention the safety/security of having stuff put back at the ready.
If you have searched any forums you will see people are willing to help others that want to help themselves. They put in links to places that have the info to do so.
So my questions is?
Why not CBC be one of those places that gets linked to as a 'helper'?
I also bet that CBC would not have a problem accepting sponsors paying for time on those shows.
This will be my last post to you Susan. Its now in your/CBC's lap.
As you can see there are many that would help with info. and suggestions/ideas.
But not get in the world's face, to say, 'Hey look at me I got foods, etc.,' specially when there is trouble.
We do it to protect our family (s) for whatever may come. ( no not from little green men or the like, either)
Many did without many a thing and saved to get things we need. No treats nor eating out and not the latest great toy or games to be able to put back. (prep)
Worked out hinnies off to plant, weed and protect from bugs and nature and then..... slaved over a hot stove in a hot house to preserve food.
So why in sam hill would anyone want advertise that NATION WIDE to those, to lazy to do for themselves.
Would you yourself Susan, want to get out there and broadcast if you had put stuff back? Only to have yourself mocked and called names for being able to take care of you or yours by the school yard bullies that are pea green with envy that you are ready to tackle what comes?
I am sure we all could make a mile long list of things to do to help. But why should we if you/CBC don't want to take us that do put back/prep, seriously and only poke fun cause we are using common sense?
See what a normal winter snowstorm brought out PDQ cause they knew I bake and knit? They thought or kinda counted on me that I would be right there to help them.
The only reason they know that, is cause I help the Christmas hampers in our town by donating eggs, bread and knitted articles.
If I have helped one someone out by my long rambling posts, even if I don't know it, I am happy.
This comes from someone that has been there with no way out, many times but always managed to get my feet back on the ground again and runnin'. And when I did, I re-stocked my supplies the best I could.
So I know the value of having put back for what we never really know til it hits..
I also known the desolation of loosing everything, not once, but a few times so I am not just flappin' my jaws (fingers) here.
Susan if you got to here or ever came back to see the results of your post. Heres one saying I will leave with you.
"Loose lips sinks ships."
I will leave you to figure that one out.
Have a great day and may you never be in need.
A sense of humor is absolutely essential to survival.
OldTimeGardener I am liking your posts a lot!
Perhaps we could ask the CBC to help us help others...
Maybe the CBC could film a short 30 second ad for us and run it as a PSA?
I, as well as many others I am sure, would love to participate in a get prepared campaign sponsored by the CBC!
If you could arrange for this to become a reality, I will give you your interview.
Hello all, thank you for your responses. I have located one prepper in the Ottawa area who's keen to be interviewed, so we'll be speaking with her at 3:20 tomorrow afternoon. If anyone else is interested I'm still happy to turn it into a panel discussion.
Denob, the 30-second ad seems like a fine idea, but CBC Radio doesn't air ads, so I'm afraid I'm not in a position to help you. But if you live in the Ottawa area and had an interest in being interviewed, you could certainly mention the preppers network if you like. Is it the network that you were hoping to advertise?
To others of you who have responded here, I'm sorry to have offended you with my request. My intention isn't to mock anyone. If you'd like to hear the interview we have planned for tomorrow, it'll be live streamed at cbc.ca/ottawa at about 3:20 tomorrow afternoon. 91.5 FM for those of you in eastern Ontario.
Denob if a PSA were to happen I may actually feel that some portion of my tax dollars went to something noble. However, media is nothing but fear porn for ratings.
